Recently, I visited the local pawn shop, which has a fairly extensive selection of electronics, when a mobo with two Slot 1 CPUs caught my eye - an Asus P2B-D, a solid 440BX board with two Pentium 2s and all 4 slots of RAM populated. I offered them 25$ (hey, fair offer for an SMP Slot 1 board) and got home to assemble it. I found out the CPUs were Pentium 2 450s and the RAM was 768 MB total. Nice! I put in an 80 GB WD HD of mine, Corsair GS500 PSU, GeForce 256 DDR (64 MB AGP card, mine has a very low serial number) and a DEC Tulip based card, which wasn't working, so I replaced it with an EtherLink XL and it's all dandy. Windows 2000 is put on to take advantage of the SMP.

CPU-Z validation.

Temporary battlestation. The case is kinda dingy and needs cleaning.

Proof.

Now... I need a sound card. I have a Forte FM801 and a SoundBlaster 16 all ready - I'd like to save my SB16 for a more retro system, but are there other options on the table here?

M2 @ 250 MHz, 64 MB SDE, SiS5598, Compaq Presario 2286, Windows 98

Ah nice, the original GPU!

I think some PCI soundcard would be most appropriate (not to mention that ISA cards in such fast systems tend to be troublesome). Perhaps some Sound Blaster Live 5.1? Or some nice Terratec? A Juli@?

My SB Live is in my Coppermine, and I already have it working pretty well in there. I've considered Vortex, except Windows 2000 compatibility is a must.

Well, bad news, I think my disk is kaput. Windows 2000 complains of a corrupted registry, Debian keels over trying to format, and BeOS just goes "sorry, can't" when asked to initialize/format. Will replace eventually.

At least its just the disk and not the motherboard, much easier to fix!
Agree with the PCI card as Win2k is the OS. My favourite is the Audigy 2 ZS, although its not going to be a massive difference to the 5.1,
Naturally there is nothing stopping you from duel booting, My P2B-DS duel boots between 2k and 98/Dos7 and has a AWE64 for when I need another Dos machine.
I was surprised how many games worked in 2k, Just about all of them. Its my new favourite Win9x OS.
What revision is your motherboard?

Woo! Put an IDE disk in, instead of reflashing the SATA card. Now a sound card (and maybe BeOS drivers for the GeForce?) is something I need. (I also have a Hauppauge capture card and an old copy of Premiere. That'll be fun? What else is fun for 90s SMP?)

Nice setup and great deal! I have the same board currently paired with a P3 1000 and Voodoo 5, though I occasionally mess around with dual P2 450s and various other video cards when I'm in the tinkering mood 😉

I approve of this.

So do I.

Nice system OP. I would never want to use 2 slot1 piii. The pii just seems like a lot more fun.
