The SoftMuseum Collection (internally known as "SPCM" for short) is an emulator that is currently being developed and maintained, and which aims to accurately recreate many different personal computers from different time periods.
Latest release: SPCM Version 1.00 (PR100) (pre-release; built August 4th, 2015 and released on September 8th, 2015)
NOTES:
- Not currently self-hosting. Self-hosting is the term used for when a product is stable enough for its preceding versions to build its successors. In this case, the current SPCM binaries are a hex-edited and resource-edited version of the PCem binaries, with a completely new product name, updated dialog boxes that are clearer and easier to understand and use, and a new executable name (SPCM.EXE) and renamed configuration file (SPCM.INI) to make it easier to open and modify from the Windows user interface. Among these changes is also a change to the menu bar to prevent it from conflicting with keystrokes in any of the emulated machines, which was a common problem with PCem.
The emulator will become self-hosting once the latest PCem source code becomes stable. While the current version is still in its very early stages of development and is still far from finished, it will provide a rough example of what the emulator will be like, as well as a way for users on this site to get started with testing it out.
- Early version of PCE mode simulator available for IBM PC and PC/XT machines.
- Includes toolkit for building the SPCM binaries. Currently based on confirmed-working PCem source code from February 19th, 2015, but will be updated and completed once the project becomes self-hosting.
Version numbering scheme:
- The version number starts out with the first version ("100" for 1.00) and continues by each single digit from there.
- Upon starting work on the second version ("200" for 2.00), the current version number will first increment by 200 digits.
- Updates will continued to be made to the current version while each upcoming version is in development. For example, there may well be a version 1.01, version 1.10, and so on, before version 2.00 is released.
Known issues:
- Development of PS/2 system board emulation will start following the release of the next build of SPCM. Currently, all IBM PS/2 machines are using the emulated IBM PC/AT system board (for 286-based models) and generic 386 system board (for 386-based models). Please do not submit bug reports on these issues.
- Emulation of COMPAQ machines currently is heavily incomplete and lacks emulation of COMPAQ's system board for each model. COMPAQ system board emulation will become available once the project finally becomes self-hosting and is moved to the latest PCem source code, which contains system board-level emulation of the COMPAQ Deskpro 386.
Upcoming features:
- Self hosted binaries with latest source code compilations
- Support for emulation of the IBM PS/2 system board models
- Support for emulation of the COMPAQ system board models
- MFM hard disk emulation (XTIDE currently used as a substitute until build with MFM disk controller emulation becomes available to test)
- Simulation of floppy disk and hard disk seek sounds
- Improved disk format support, including ImageDisk, SuperCard Pro, Transcopy, and Kryoflux image support.
- Monochrome phosper simulation (White, Green, and Amber; currently supported by the included PCemFX binaries and will be ported over to SPCM once development enters "full swing")
