I have problems with the following games. I have installed Windows 98 but trying to run these games from the command prompt only:

Cannon Fodder
- I can't get this game to start at all. When running this, the screen will just remain black.

Zool
- Same problem as with Cannon Fodder, just a black screen on startup. Have to restart computer.

Stunts
- This game starts well, but when quiting the game, it sometimes gives some EMM386.EXE error and I have to restart the computer.

Space Quest 4
- Gives unable to initialize audio hardware error, if I have installed this game to use Sound Blaster card. If selected Adlib in setup, it doesn't give this error but sound effects are not as good then.

I have Sound Blaster 16 ISA sound card model CT2980. Are there any ideas what could be the problems with these games? For example Duke Nukem 2 works mostly quite good with all Sound Blaster effects turned, but yesterday the game hanged because of the sound card.

Try running them from DOS, not Windows.

What machine are you using? What memory configuration?

Motherboard Abit AB-BM6
128 MB RAM
Intel Celeron 400 MHz
S3 Trio 3D/2X

These are the main components. I like to have Windows 98 installed because of the FAT32 support, but always start the computer in DOS mode instead of starting Windows.

Very fast machine, lots of memory. Could be causing issues.

Ok, I was able to get Space Quest 4, The Time Rippers running now without the audio initialization error on startup.

I downloaded http://sierrahelp.com/Files/SoundUtilities/SBSIERRA.ZIP file and used sbsierra.exe to patch the sndblast.drv file.

But I could not get this patch to work with sndblast.drv included in the VGA version of Space Quest 1, The Sarien Encounter.

Instead I had to copy the patched sndblast.drv from SQ4 directory to SQ1 and it seemed to work.
