Started the absolutely basic outlines today. Keep watching. I will post my work for someone to take over.
Actually making the initial basic outlines and then play the ball for all to jump in and take over.

UPS...
Forgot to fill in drives in the database. No problem as I am working with pen and paper at the moment.

Isn't that what vogonswiki is supposed to be? I wish more people would contribute to that.

Vogons Wiki is mostly a knowledge base it seems (correct me if this is wrong). The museum is write a different idea. I love looking through people's collections, especially when I've got a graphics card I can't identify, etc. I don't expect anyone to actively photo and upload their entire collection with descriptions and the like or more people would be doing it already. amoretro.de is an obvious and awesome example of what we should have more of in my opinion. Now I haven't told brostenen about most of these ideas yet so hopefully this won't be overwhelming 😉 The way I see the museum developing is as follows:

- at the most basic level, users will be able to search a database of parts and click an 'add to my collection' button. This would make it quick and easy for people to build a list. Anyone else use discogs.com?

- on top of this, additions to the database would be crowd sourced so, if something isn't in the DB, you would be able to add it. Changes and additions would be moderated to avoid obvious chaos.

- users would also be able to add photos of devices (or just the box art - don't worry Artex, no one will make you open them) 😉

- comments can be added.

- now here's the killer feature: the 'System Builder'. Users would be able to select a number of devices and combine them to indicate they have built this system. They would then be able to add benchmarking results from certain industry standard apps and compare their system with others of a similar spec it will then be possible to identify the fastest system of a certain generation etc. The info people seem to want to know the most is which graphics card is fastest, which motherboard is fastest, which CPUs are the most stable overclockers, but also which hardware is compatible.

Obviously there are two huge undertakings here: designing the site itself and also populating and managing the database. As far as I can see this would become a full time job at some point and is actually one I would love to do long term. I could host the site in the meantime as I have good bandwidth and a Win2k3 server. Obviously that makes ASP the language of choice but we can work this out.

Any thoughts or ideas on the above?

Cool idea. 😀
Designing the database and website with all the functions mentioned above will be quite difficult though.

I love databases. This is like the ultimate challenge. I think I can handle the algorithms but I currently lack a relevant language (not loving Python's data handling methods even though it supports JSON).

Steal some ideas from vlask: http://vgamuseum.info/

In fact, PM him here, he may have some advice 😀

Awesome! I'd forgotten about that. We certainly don't want to be stepping on anyone's toes though.

Yeah... Seems like a good idea, taking it the way of people contributing to the database and then just adding stuff to their collection.
I am still working with paper and pen. When I am done, it will be handed over to someone who can simplify it and create a real database with tables and relations and stuff.... I can do a simple masterpage in ASP.NET too, with CSS and stuff. Actually the basic design and then hand it over to someone who can polish it or change whatever he thinks. Just doing the basic stuff here. 😁

Just doing some basic stuff though. Something for people to build upon, refine and make bigger. 😉

EDIT
This is just a small sample of what I am working with right now. Hopefully some DB wizzard can sort my work out, when I am finished, in order to create a DB with relations and stuff. I will scan the final result and mail to whoever want's to build the actual DB.

Dude, I really appreciate you getting this thing of the ground and so soon! I can do databases - what format should I use? I'm guessing Access is something we can convert to anything else?

I actually don't know. I really don't plan to do more than the DB proposal that I am doing right now, and then program the website template.
I will program it in ASP.NET Framework 4.0 with C# as code behind. This way, I do the design (inkluding the CSS), then hand the project over to someone who can do the functions on the page. You only need to know, if the DB you create can be used in ASP.NET site's. Then it's all good.

First things first.
We need to have a running DB as the first thing to be created. Just have some test information in it, in order for the one that programs the functions, can work as smooth as possible.
Then we need a template (the bones of the page) in order to build upon. Before functions are being build, we need to have the membership up and running.
That's my thought on what direction we need to work. We skilled people, that want to do stuff for free.

Perosnally, I can donate a handfull of files, containing code. As I still have all the work and project's that I did back in school.
I even have a complete website, mostly programmed in C# when it comes to MS-SQL access. And other stuff, that I singlehanded crafted from scratch, back in 2011/12. It has some jQuery scripts and stuff. Conami code too, as an easter egg.
That site is not that special, so I will just give away code, if anyone wants it of course.
It has a complete backend/admin-panel were the DB is accessed for reading and writing, using as much C# as possible.

Speaking of the format... Don't do Access... That suck's.
Better go with any of the SQL's out there. MS/MY/Whatever else does not matter.
What matter's is to avoid Access all together.

Writing it from scratch seems like a waste of effort IMHO, and drastically increases the chance that the project won't eventuate. Wordpress is free and can do just about anything with the right template / plugins.

Can't be on this project, if a ready made CMS is to be used. Allways build my stuff from the ground and up.
Even Umbraco is not something I know about. Allways seemed like a muddy and confusing system to me.
Will finish the database proposal, and then let people decide if we go wordpress or not.
Just for the record. PHP is an alien language to me. Only know ASP.NET

This was the first thing I said to brostenen as there are so many platforms out there but the guy has skills, passion and motivation - I would never shoot that down!

I started writing something like this for CPU collections but never fully finished it.

http://pcb.vogonswiki.com/login/

I wanted to create a method for generating benchmark graphs and logging them, using something like:
http://c3js.org

More info:
http://www.vogonswiki.com/index.php/PCB

Code is PHP/MySQL/Custom Framework.

4 hardware groups left..... 😉 Then I am done writing up what need's to go in the DB.
Sorting out what type of data (nvarchar, int and so on) that need to be used in the DB, will be left to someone who are up for this.

After this is done, I will start on the template, for the museum. Unless of course, someone else want to do it.
Anyone good with photoshop or something, in order to create banner's?
