Took me an hour to complete, but i suck at Doom. I think it's better than the original map though.

Btw, did anyone else get weird graphical issues at the end of the level where you fight the barons? If i look towards the portals they are coming from everything looks like a broken mirror and my fps drops lower the closer i get to them. It made the last part extra hard, cause i was basically shooting blind.

What system were you playing it on and what DOOM port?

According to the text file, John tried it in Zdoom and Crispy Doom. These are modern ports. I only tried it for a few minutes, and it seems to play fine in Boom, but slows down in some parts (this is via Dosbox, on a not-so-powerful C2D laptop). It runs in the original Doom for a while, but gives a Visplane Overflow in the first outside area.

It starts hard on UV. If you don't plan your game and act fast, you will be overwhelmed in the first room. 😀

I tried in original Doom and it does not work for me. It hangs after saying loading e1m8b.wad. I tried this on 3 machine: 386DX40, Pentium II @ 400 and finally in DosBox on a very powerful Core i7 4790.

UPDATE: Zdoom tells me this: "You cannot -file with the shareware version. Register!". Maybe that is true for the original doom as well? I only have the shareware version.

Yes. Romero must have forgotten this behavior when he said that the WAD can work with the Shareware Doom. 😀

The readme clearly says it needs a limit removing source port. So you cannot use dos doom or windoom.

It mostly likely works in PrBoom, Doomsday, Chocolate Doom, ZDoom, ZDaemon, Zandronum, GZDoom, Crispy Doom, Risen 3D, and any other limit removing port.

Is it a full episode? How many maps are in the WAD file?

I can pretty much safely bet that this will be 100x more enjoyable than the Zeni-Doom which is coming out this year.

Wow, Romero's new map is a convoluted maze. It has so many alcoves and over-under passages, that it's confusing even with the automap. I'd say it is as close as you can get to the room-over-room feeling in the vanilla DOOM engine.

It's good that most of the original DOOM maps were not so long and convoluted, otherwise many players would have given up. 😀

Played on DOOM Retro and it was literally a blast from the past!
Which is the best way to play it also in pure DOS? (so, which is the best limit-removing DOOM engine for DOS?)
Thanks

Just finished playing this bad boy and I tell you all the + ratings have noting to do with some form of compulsive cultic reverence for everything Romero; the map just happens to be that neat.

To sum it up, it's very much the life and essence of the "Knee-deep in the Dead" episode condensed in a single map. Very detailed, very familiar, but at the same time refreshing and enticingly challenging on default settings (not that I'm anything as a player, but I can beat the whole game on Ultra-Violence no sweat, which thing I've never been able to do for Plutonia; you do the math).

I can honestly say today that if haply he were to come up with a whole IWAD expansion for Doom as a commercial product, I'd not forbear to exact of me his good pleasure.

I used Crispy Doom, but any limits-removing source port should do the job.

Definitely a keeper.
