Vlad,

Then are you considering coding plugins for the Windows port of DosBox?

I think it would be absolutely great to have CD-ROM and MIDI support in it (especially the superb MIDI quality of the Roland SoftSynth included in DirectX).

Thanks a lot.
Regards.

I keep hearing people singing praises for the Roland SoftSynth, but I still prefer my hardware MIDI with special soundfonts like Fluid.

Yes, it’s my fault.

Hello Snover,

I agree that many SoundFonts nowadays are of extraordinary quality, and that you can make quite good MIDI compositions with them.

But, I think that the Roland SC-55 is still king for playing old games designed for General MIDI. Likewise, the Roland MT-32 itself is king for playing games designed for MT-32 sound.

We are very lucky to have an emulator of the SC-55 included in DirectX for free. Although it's not perfect, with it we can enjoy the music almost exactly as the original composers wanted.

We are not so lucky with the MT-32, but I still hope someday, somewhere, someone who cares will be able to make an emulator of it.

So, I'm afraid SoundFonts aren't the answer for old games. As this review can confirm:

Kind regards.
