Hi folks,

Been reading through this thread on k6plus.com http://www.k6plus.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f= … =1752&start=150
And am wondering if this might be a far better chipset for super7 than I thought?
I have a ACER Labs V75M from a IBM Aptiva BIOS date 8/24/1999, it has a K4-2 450 MHz CPU, i use it almost daily as a DVD player with a Creative labs DXR-2 DVD decoder card with the on-board video(6326) and sound(ESS Solo1). Also use it as a basic web browser with retrozilla, but never even considered it as a performance chip set, even with a K6-2. The folk in this thread seem to have gotten fantastic performance from this thing! Any of you folks have experience with this chipset?
I have a earlier SiS chipset(ECS P5SD-AS VER 1.oA\ SiS 5591/5595)motherboard that utterly flies with Cyrix 6x86MX/MII CPU's but is only average with AMD K6.

SIS made decent chipsets. The Asus socket 7 board I have is the fastest one, beating all my VIA and ALI boards 😀

Here is a comparison between SiS 530, Ali Aladdin 5 and VIA MVP3

Gigabyte GA-5SMM with built in audio
Jetway 542C with AWE64
Gigabyte GA-5AX with AWE64
PC Chips M577 with built in audio

All systems with 1x256MB SDRAM and a S3 Trio64V+ 2MB PCI video card. Optimal settings.

Sis 530 Gigabyte GA-5SMM K6-3+ 600 4.5x133 (Motherboard cache off)

Quake: 84.4 FPS
Doom: 99.59 FPS (2134 gametics in 750 realtics)
3dbench2: 259.1 FPS
PCPbench: 149.3 FPS
SuperPi1M: 4m 55s
"MPEG1 DVD" PAL 720*576 MP2: ~18.5 FPS
"MPEG1 DVD" NTSC 720*480 23.976 MP2: ~22.5 FPS

Ali Aladdin 5 Jetway 542C 512KB L3 cache K6-3+ 600 6x100 (Non bugged Aladdin 5, the board can cache all memory with 512KB cache)

Quake: 89.5 FPS
Doom: 89.34 FPS (2134 gametics in 836 realtics)
3dbench2: 319.1 FPS
PCPbench: 175.7 FPS
SuperPi1M: 5m 39s
"MPEG1 DVD" PAL 720*576 MP2: ~19 FPS
"MPEG1 DVD" NTSC 720*480 23.976 MP2: ~22.5 FPS

Ali Aladdin 5 Gigabyte GA-5AX 512KB cache K6-3+ 600 6x100 (bugged Aladdin 5, 128MB memory)

Quake: 90.3 FPS
Doom: 91.53 FPS (2134 gametics in 816 realtics)
3dbench2: 464.2 FPS
PCPbench: 176.8 FPS
SuperPi1M: 5m 36s
"MPEG1 DVD" PAL 720*576 MP2: ~20.5 FPS
"MPEG1 DVD" NTSC 720*480 23.976 MP2: OK

VIA MVP3 PC Chips M577 1MB L3 cache K6-3+ 600 6x100

Quake: 93.0 FPS
Doom: 90.97 FPS (2134 gametics in 821 realtics)
3dbench2: 319.5 FPS
PCPbench: 179.7 FPS
SuperPi1M: 5m 26s
"MPEG1 DVD" NTSC 720*480 23.976 MP2: OK
"MPEG1 DVD" PAL 720*576 25 FPS MP2: OK

The MVP3 chipset seems to be the fastest in my tests. The Jetway board has less than optimal memory performance and only 512KB cache so perhaps the Asus P5A or the Gigabyte GA-5AX would have fared better. The settings were optimized for general performance, not SuperPi.

Edit

I added Gigabyte GA-5AX, it's faster than the Jetway board but not by much except in 3dbench2 where it's really fast.
The MVP3 board is still the fastest, at least in Windows.

true, i got 5:00 with mvp3 at 100*5.5, and 4:49 at 100*6.
for long term safe usage, go with mvp3 as it has best performance at 100fsb, although it sux when onboard cache is disabled at higher fsb.
for extreme overclocking, go with ali5 as it has good performance with onboard cache disabled at 120+ fsb.
and the sis530... go with it for what? at 100fsb it does simply suck, and although it can run at 133fsb, its 133fsb performance is merely on par with mvp3 at 100fsb, and no match for overclocked ali5. last but not least, it can't make use of any monstrous agp video cards.

note: some mvp3 boards equipped with -4ns cache can also be overclocked to 112fsb with onboard cache still enabled, which is also deadly, and i can estimate a superpi time of 4:20 with k6-3+ at 112*6.

Hmm, I tested my SiS530 with S3 ViRGE 325, Matrox Mystique 220 and Tseng ET6000(some of the fastest PCI cards on the market), all were slower than the on-board 6326, seems at least my motherboard only really likes it's own IGP.

I came to the same conclusion. The onboard video produces the best DOOM scores I ever seen with a Socket-7 system, it was slower in Quake though probably because of the shared memory.

SiS 530 Gigabyte GA-5SMM K6-3+ 620 5x124 (L2 disabled) onboard video and sound (I could not run 133MHz FSB with the onboard video)

Interesting you got the same results. does your board disable the on board VGA when a PCI card is installed? Mine does not and there is no BIOS or motherboard jumper to do so. Regardless the SiS 6326 IGP seems to run far better on this board than any stand alone PCI 6326 card manages on other boards.

You set the shared video memory to 2MB, that will disable the onboard video if a PCI card is installed. At least this is how my board works.

Dont forget to set the BIOS to detect PCI video first or what ever the setting is called.

Ah OK, I will try that. I assume it makes no difference to PCI video card performance though?

Not what I could see but Speedsys reports the full memory amount instead of the memory amount minus 4/8MB and you can run 133 MHz FSB if you disable the onboard cache. 😀

OK thanks, so that will require a k6-III to make sensible then.

Yea, with a K6-2 the highest FSB the cache can handle is the best bet, probably 112 MHz.

this may be a slight exaggeration, for dos games why don't you people give nvidia cards a try and see for yourself.(and i mean nvidia cards from riva128 to geforce3, dos performance of geforce4 and later nosedived.)

I have a nVIdia RIVA 128 in my Duron "Spitfire" 650MHz system, it is a very quick. Not relevant for a sis 530 board tho that only has PCI.

SiS 530 is a nice chipset, providing that manufacturer knows how to use it (there are a lot of crap motherboards also made with this chipset).

By contrary, SiS620 (SiS530 peripheral IP core + SiS Intel PPro/P2/P3 SMU/memory controller), is a slow and pretty bugged offer. 630 corrects bugs but is still slow. SiS635 a bugfree and fast offer for Pentium 3, but i've seen rarely anything based on it, only a few System On Board solutions. So you're better using intel chipsets for Intel P2+ stuff

SiS offers for P4 are all them nice, and in some cases them can even provide Native ISA support, providing that manufacturer knows how to use them properly.

Best,

In that case I would set the video memory to auto, set the PCI video card as primary and reboot, load Windows and disable the unboard video in the Device Manager and reboot, boot Windows, reboot again and boot DOS and check with Speedsys if the onboard video uses any memory (it will be subtracted from the total system memory).

If the onboard video dosnt use any memory its now disabled and you can try 133 MHz FSB if you like. The onboard video will probably still be listed as a device in Speedsys as it's part of the chipset but this dosn't matter, as long as it dosn't use any memory it's disabled.

If the method above dosnt work I think you are out of luck.

If your motherboard is a version with dedícated video memory this method for checking if the onboard video is disabled obvoiusly won't work.
