I am noticing a huge performance drop in 3D when I have my Geforce2 MX 200 in the same computer but once running with Win98 and once running with WinXP. For example 3DMark2000 gives me 2400 in Win98 but only 1122 in WinXP. The computer specs are:

Pentium III @ 700Mhz
512MB RAM (@100Mhz)
Geforce2 MX 200 (PCI version)

In WinXP I tried both Forceware 115 as well as Detonator 45 with same results. The score that I am getting (1122) is lower than even my P2 400Mz with a Voodoo3 AGP (which gives me 1400). Things I tried (but did not work):

- change driver version (Forceware 115 to Detonator 45)
- use Hardware T&L vs Pentium III in 3DMark2000
- Play around with nVidia control panel and turn on performance mode (AA off, etc).

Is there something obvious I am missing?

Or SP1. Iirc Microsoft forced ACPI with XP SP2 and up. ACPI makes a detrimental impact on your frame rate.

SP3 would make a huge hit as well with only 512mb of ram

Don't use XP use WFFLP. Standard xp will run on old cpu's but it runs like crap if you don;t get rid of a lot of componenets

Legally acquiring WinFLP is easier said than done.

There's some google tutorials on how to get regular xp down to a very low ram/cpu usage. I got xp down to a point where game benchmarks would be identical between xp and 98. I think I got it down to 40 sum mb being used at any time.

WFFLP is pretty much the same thing with many components turned off or removed.

hello
guess its because you are watching on the performance of 3dmark2000, which is such an old benchmark that nvidia had stopped optimizing for it long before winxp was out.
i tested 3 drivers before, in win98 though: 8.05(pre-10 series), 14.70(1x series) and 30.82(2x series). their 3dmark2000 scores kept nosediving, meanwhile their 3dmark01 scores boosted considerably.
therefore, you can give 8.05 a try if you are caring about 3dmark2000.

it depends, if paired with a very fast cpu(core2 for example) i would go with 66.93, but otherwise i would stick with good old 30.82.
the 4x~5x series give best 3dmark01/03 scores, but i had bad game compatibility experiences with them.
