Hey guys,

I having an issue with my retro build when I am gaming some games will slightly freeze then continue again.
It's very noticeable in Counter Strike Condition Zero when the bots use radio chatter and in Interstate 76 when you use the radio to ask stampede for a poem.

I am not sure if it's my video card or sound card causing the issue. UT99 runs flawlessly however. I have tried to reinstall video and sound card drivers. Installed latest chipset drivers. Updated BIOS, changed motherboard still the same.

My system.

hmm. Wouldn't expect stability with that arrangement

Though I did have this same randomlypause-after-awhile bug on 256mb DDR back in the day. Also used a SBLive but I don't remember what caused it either 🙁

I'd try removing the Live! first and using the onboard audio. See if that fixes it, otherwise try another GPU and see what that does.

Hey i removed the Sound Blaster and dropped the RAM to 512 instead of 1GB. Still the same issue.
i noticed in the device manager that the the gpu and usb are on the same IRQ Channel do you think that might cause the issue

TRY CHANGING PCI LATENCY if you have that option in the bios

Are you using a LCD? What refresh rate are you using? Try 60Hz if LCD. Hztool helps with configuring each resolution.

I have found some LCDs may drop frames if above 60Hz.

a samsung 20" 60hz refresh rate. its not dropping frames, as i already mentioned. Its doing like a slight pause then continues gameplay.

Are you using something like fraps to measure the framerate?

How about temperatures on the cpu/gpu? The P4 maybe too hot and throttling?

Is DMA enabled for the HDD's?

Try to remove the soundcard and not use sound with the game. Does it still slow down?

If all else fails check the board as overheating chipsets can sometimes do some strange things performance wise hurting the fps in games. How is your minimum fps vs your average and max fps? Micro lags are truly annoying.

Iam not sure if DMA is enabled or not how do I check? I have already removed the sound card and still the same. There temperatures are around 70s. Iam not using fraps

My avergae all round fps is around 60 no dips unless there is smoke. The fps doesn't really drop. It's just this really annoying Pause, Freeze or stutter

To Bus Master your system and determine whether your drive supports DMA:

Open System Properties in Control Panel (select Start > Settings > Control Panel)
Select the Device Manager tab
Click the + sign next to the Disk drives entry
Select the drive you want to enable for DMA and click Properties
On the Settings tab, there should be a DMA check box, if this box is unchecked, place a check mark. If there is no check box (or it is grayed out), your motherboard chipset does not support the bus master interface. If the check box is not checked after you restart your system, your hard disk probably has been automatically disabled again because the hard disk may not support a multiple-word DMA protocol. For more information see Microsoft's Knowledge Base Article No. 159560

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windows98/tune-35.html

If by chance you are using Intel Application Accelerator it may have already setup DMA for you and can open the program and check which UDMA it is using.

I do believe that 70*c is within TJ Max on the CPU. It could be the chipset messing with you like nforce4max says. Try running the game with the case door off and maybe try pointing a fan over the mobo/cpu/gpu over it to see if it helps with the slowdowns.

nah i dont have intel application accelerator installed.
i intalled Max Payne 1 and maxed out all the graphic settings and it seems more demanding then CS Condition Zero but there was no stutting, Micro freezes or pauses.

i am really confused what could be causing it its only two games that its happening on.

I remember seeing this issue on a Compaq Deskpro EN tower. It had a Pentium iii 933, 320mb ram and some kind of Geforce with 32mb of vram. I remember playing GTA3 smoothly then suddenly the game was running in slow motion for something like half a second. I was never able to fix that and gave up. Just bought another computer for gaming.

Might want to try those two games on a faster rig and see what happens, if you get the micro lags when all the other games are fine then it is the games. A good example of this is Gothic 3, runs on just about anything until you realize that it has the most cancerous lags ever.
