Conclusions so far:

Profiler can see all VESA modes that each card has in XP just as well as DOS does.

Both nVidia/ATi cards have the Linear Frame Buffer address (D0000000-D7FFFFFF) in their Resources tab.

The ATi card has the LFB as the first address range. Could this make a difference in compatibility?

ATi card has more display modes and VESA 2.0.
nVidia card has 1600x1200 and VESA 3.0.

None of the refresh rate programs work in NTVDM for either. Those that look for VESA 2.0/3.0 work fine for both cards at detecting the VESA version but do not actually perform their functions since the way that NT uses VESA is "different".

nVidia cards cannot go past 640x480 using NOLFB in BUILD engine games.
nVidia cards work fine in DOS for all of their resolutions, which leads me to conclude that it is an NT problem. The only NT version where nVidia cards are somewhat compatible and on somewhat equal terms with ATi cards is Windows XP ...except for a few discrepancies.

ATi cards can use ALL of their resolutions in NT with NOLFB in BUILD engine games. They are also more compatible with games requiring VESA in ALL NT versions (not just XP).

Notice that this card does NOT have D0000000-D7FFFFFF as one of its memory ranges, unlike both of DosFreak's cards.

It appears that while VESA 2.0/3.0 offer more modes TOTAL (42 versus 27), they do NOT offer any 32-bit colour modes, nor do they offer resolutions above 1152x864x8, unlike the forced VESA 1.2 modes, which support up to 1024x768x32 (highest 32-bit mode), and up to 1600x1200x16 (highest resolution). Go figure. So much for nVidia having superior drivers, I guess.

Eh? When I use NOLFB with BUILD on XP, I can go up to 1600x1200 easily.

Too bad I don't have XP so I can't really test games...
I mean, I could, but then I couldn't have sound effects, and that would suck. Besides, trying to force-quit out of a DOS game using VESA means that my system locks up. (bah.)

What exactly are you using to generate this report? I really hesitate to put anything from SciTech on my PC if I don't have to.

Using the standard v30.82 drivers on both sides.

We are using "profile.exe" from the SDD 6.53 DOS package. The SDD installation just installs 1 file in the root of C: to determine if it's installed or not and for time-checking. That's it.

Glad I installed in Virtual PC then manually copied the files over.

Not sure what parameters you're using and I couldn't get it to write a logfile, so I just directed the output to a file.

I may be too dumb, but I really have a problem with all this and my Voodoo5.
Isn't all this Vesa mode stuff still driver related on NT based systems?
And isn't what profiler.exe reports just theoretical that might not work in practice?

I say this becasue my Voodoo5 has big problems doing 640x480x8 even though it is reported as working. All I get is big tearing like it is running some unsupported resolution. Testing it on my Windows ME dual-boot it works fine.

What profile.exe says on my system:

The Windows version is what I found, but it has DOS components. I just ran the PROFILE.EXE from the SDD directory, but like I said "something's wrong". I got identical results from Win98SE,True DOS,XP, and XP with NOLFB.

That's the point. It shows you that your access to VESA modes is the same across ALL OS's. It also let's you know what VESA modes your card support's. Now the trick is pinpointing what inhibit's NT from using those mode's. Since it seems that the Higher Vesa Modes require the LFB then we need some way to get those GF4's (or other cards) to access the mode correctly.

But why would it report the same modes available in XP, regardless of whether or not I was running NOLFB? It appears that it thinks that I have proper VESA support in XP without NOLFB, and I don't.

Dunno whats up with your GF4 but my TNT1 goes past 640x480 in BUILD engine games just fine (well, in Duke3D at least...). I had Duke3D up to about 1024x768 (confirmed by my monitors on-screen display) with NOLFB but I was forced back to 320x200 by the fact that above that, the sound gets all stuttery. Gonna have to wait until I get a faster computer... (hopefully Shadow Warrior, which has the stuttery sound even at 320x400, will work properly then too)

I just checked and that works too. It's a little slow and has a refresh of 60Hz (I think I get 100 at 1024x768 which makes me thinks its more my monitor than Windows) but the game runs. I tried 1600x1200 as well and got the same results.

ATI looks a better route for VESA compatibility then, eh?

Regarding the GF4 it is notable that a number of Windows 9x/ME users found that it locks up if you try to use both UniRefresh and VBEPlus (link in my sig).

This is a combo a lot of people were using for compatibility with older games. I don't think Rob Muller (the programs' author) ever got to the bottom of the trouble. But there was a significant change in VESA support between the GF3 and GF4.

98lite with 629K of free conventional memory in full DOS mode using QEMM 9.0 (or 628K with UMBPCI.SYS providing real mode for FastVid) with SmartDrive, CD-ROM, CuteMouse, sound support and UniRefresh all loaded high.
