DOSBOX supports only a few 8 bit (256 colors) modes. My guess is that the game probably uses more colors.

Yes, the game probably needs 15 or 16 bpp vesa modes that are not supported. You can only hope that these modes will be implemented in the next version of DOSBox. As far as I know it wasn´t on priority list because the games that need them would work slowly anyway. But I think it doesn´t apply to all of the games/programs, some are not much demanding (like Diamond) and most probably would work just fine.
