Making clickable embedded images using Imgur image hosting service

Postby Stiletto » 2016-6-16 @ 18:40

Imgur now wants users to use the new IFrame embed code provided by them, but VOGONS has HTML code support disabled. So what to do?

Well, all of Imgur's old functionality still works (just deprecated?) so here's what you can do. Unfortunately, it requires writing the code manually as there's no script built into the forum to do it automatically.

1. Get the "BBCode (message boards & forums)" code for your image. Ex.:
Code: Select all
[img]http://i.imgur.com/o8kleQb.jpg[/img]

If that's not available for some reason, get the "Direct Link (email & IM)" URL for your image, and then surround it with image tags (if in full view, you can use the [Img] button in the menu bar above the new post/new topic window).

2. If you'd like to display only a thumbnail version of your image, Imgur automatically generates these! See Imgur's API documentation:
http://api.imgur.com/models/image
Code: Select all
Thumbnail Suffix -  Thumbnail Name  - Thumbnail Size - Keep Image Proportions
s                -   Small Square   -      90x90     -          No
b                -    Big Square    -     160x160    -          No
t                - Small Thumbnail  -     160x160    -         Yes
m                - Medium Thumbnail -     320x320    -         Yes
l                -  Large Thumbnail -     640x640    -         Yes
h                -  Huge Thumbnail  -    1024x1024   -         Yes

Here's how to get this to work. You will have to manually enter:
Code: Select all
[img]http://i.imgur.com/o8kleQbm.jpg[/img]
- adding m (or whatever the desired thumbnail size) to the filename of the image.

Did you notice the "m" just before the file extension? That's how you tell Imgur that, "Hey, this is medium sized, so downsize this image, please!"

3. BUT! We are not done yet. If you want to get the "thumbnail" clickable, we have to create the hyperlink. So... Example:
Code: Select all
[url=http://i.imgur.com/o8kleQb.jpg][img]http://i.imgur.com/o8kleQbm.jpg[/img][/url]

Note that the first link has the original URL - this is what it will take people to when they click on the image, while the URL surrounded by [img] BBCode tags is the thumbnail URL. You could even make this link the URL to the Imgur page:
Code: Select all
[url=http://imgur.com/o8kleQb][img]http://i.imgur.com/o8kleQbm.jpg[/img][/url]

... or anything you want! (within reason)

Hope this helps out you Imgur users.

Please note that the image embedding feature of VOGONS is also working fine these days so you are welcome to use the "Upload attachment" feature and use VOGONS for image hosting. Again, within reason. :)

What's that iframe malarkey? The links it's giving me look the same as ever. Although I wouldn't be surprised if they're just gradually rolling out their newest suckage, whatever it is.

Hmm, this is weird. I definitely saw it on a single image a few months ago. Now they have iframes on embedding albums only. *confused*

[EDIT] Okay, I definitely see that the old interface for picking thumbnail sizes is gone with a new upload. However, if you have an Imgur account, you can bring the old interface back after uploading your image by going to your profile, selecting "images" and then selecting a specific image. And if you DON'T have an Imgur account or if you are uploading anonymously, all bets are off.

In the case you have an Imgur account, there's a simpler way:
1. Bring up the old interface by viewing your account's uploaded images as mentioned above: Ex:
Image
2. Click on the thumbnail size you want.
3. Click on the code you want to copy it (ex. "Linked BBCode")
4. Post in your post at VOGONS. Done! :)

That's how I do it.

Hopefully they won't remove this functionality.

Why doesn't imgur offer thumbnail links by default? it takes time to create it manually.
Any alternative image hostings?

Hi RiP.

Sorry, this thread isn't especially clear.

Imgur offers thumbnail links IF you have an account. If you use it without an account, you don't get those features without creating them manually. I think it's a minor way for them to encourage people to get accounts rather than only use quasi-anonymity by never signing up.

If you have an Imgur account, you can however get them more or less automatically by following the procedures in this post: http://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=505969#p505969

There's others out there. Imgur seems to be a favorite of a lot of folks, including myself. Most others have one or more downsides (lots of ads and popups, flaky hosting that's down more often than not, so many ads that adblockers block them, fewer thumbnail options, go out of business and delete everything, or worse)

I have also seen people try to embed photos from Google Drive or Google Photos, with occasional success (until Google decides to change the way they're doing it)

The best is probably to attach to VOGONS itself, so that VOGONS hosts your images (until the day VOGONS dies, which will hopefully be never). VOGONS can also host photos, see the "Upload attachment" option when in the "Full Editor" (from a new topic/post, or in Full Reply mode). It can even attach them inline with the post. There's fewer thumbnail options than Imgur though, and occasionally it doesn't get the orientation right on vertical images.
