Been playing this game for over 15 years and I could never figure out how to make a computer player become an ally on a Random Map game. Do I have to send them tribute? If yes, how much, and what resources?

In rise of Rome, but sending tribute is one way, but only works if your asked as far as I know., sometimes but rearly the ai might ask for tribute and become a temp ally or neutral. Other then that I don't know.

Did the original AoE allow you to set teams before starting a skirmish game? You could just do it that way if you could.

Yes I do have the power to set team numbers pre-game. But it would be nice to pick and choose your allies and enemies in game, based on how they roll. Like picking the civ with the best military. I've always preferred the original Empires over Empires II for several reasons.
