Hi Folks,

I have finished putting together my new socket 3 build with a Tomato board 4DPS Ver 2.1SKT 3 motherboard, 256K cache, 2x 16 MB FPM 72-pin simms & a Diamond Stealth 64 DRAM(S3 TRIO 64V+) PCI card.

I have tested 3 CPU's in the system, Intel 486 DX/4 75MHz, AMD 486 DX/4 100MHz & Cyrix 5x86 100GP.

Have a look at the last 3 entries here on Phil's Ultimate VGA database, they all look a little low compared to other 4DPS based systems in the spread sheet , but I probably have not made anywhere as good a job of BIOS settings as some of the other experts.

As far as BIOS settings are concerned, both the AMD & Cyrix were set for WB for both level 1 & level 2 cache. The Intel is a WT chip so only level 2 was WB.
I didn't start to play with the Cyrix CPU feature enablers as yet such as branch prediction and others as I wanted to test from a level stock playing field as best I can with parts on hand.
One thing I will add is that the Cyrix feels much faster in windows 3.11 than the others, even good old After dark screensaver seems much smoother.
Shame I don't have a WB intel DX/4 100 CPU rather than the DX/4 75.I assume the intel is really crippled by the 25MHz bus speed. But to be fair all 3 of these chips I tested were probably about the same cost in 1996.
I'm tempted to swap the Diamond Stealth for my ARK LOGIC PV2000 PCI, this is blazing quick for DOS, but I haven't come across Win 3.11 drivers for it as yet(not looked for ages tho) only windows 95.
Anyhow, I have really enjoyed this build so far, the 4DPS is a really easy motherboard to work with(by 486 standards).
Best,
Chris

I have tested my IBM 5x86c 100 on 4dps but I was experiencing some problems with writeback enabled. It was simply hanging. Somebody told me it was related to voltage regulation. So I switched to atrend atc1425b. No problems since.
