So I have an old system with an MV020 board in it, using a 486DX2-66. It has an SB16 and a VLB S3 video card as well.

What I would like to do is run Windows for Workgroups 3.11 on it, but the part I am unsure about, software-wise is what to use as a quality audio player.

I only plan to play WAV's, which most any player does, but I was thinking I could find some pro-audio software such as Pro Tools to use as a novelty. (Or Sound Tools from '89)

What do you guys say?

Matthew

Just go for it 🤣 and using a 486 as a jukebox is something one doesn't see everyday.

Better yet, hack a power supply so you can power it from your car's battery and mount the motherboard under your dashboard, then you'll have a mobile music station. 😀

I/O, I/O,
It's off to disk I go,
With a bit and a byte
And a read and a write,

Mod4win and WinPlay3, and whatever unique "Midi jukebox" program your sound card ships with 😜

surely there's a port of something far more modern and opensource to Win16 or Win32s at least

If it's DOS programs you're looking for, there should be plenty. Cubic Player can handle WAVs (and works very well on 486/66), unsure if MPXPlay is suitable though

Yeah, I saw Cubic player, and it's tempting. Especially, the fact I can run a DOS client as I'd eventually like to use it as a demo rig at CanJam, and be a stark contrast to all the tablet based listening stations. 😁

MPXPlay, man, MPXPlay all the way. The README says you can play MP2 files, 44.1 KHz, 128 kbps, with a 486DX2-66.

MXPlay, eh? If the requirements can allow a system this old then that may be the way to go. I suppose I could run a modded SB16 in a lot of things, including a P4, but that sort of takes away the novelty. However, I did see a guy with a Digidesign Digi 001 setup for $30, and wondered if a DAW is good for simple listening. I have a dual Tualatin rig it could work with! 😀

Well, I really like MPXPlay, never tried it on a 486 though. The lowest I've used it on is a Pentium/100. But MP2 @ 128kbps probably doesn't sound optimal, so I don't know.
