I have one of these in my daily computer and works perfectly fine, the only 'issue' I appreciate is that volume drops a little when the two outputs are used at the same time. Otherwise, it works perfect and these kind of adaptors can de found for cheap in local bazaars (I don't really know the English name for these kind of shops, often managed by people from China where they sell almost everything you need 🤣)

Thanks! I'm looking for something with a little length, though, so I don't have to reach around to the back of the computer. But it looks basically the same as the item I linked in my OP. For $3.59 shipped, I guess it wouldn't be too big a risk if I wasn't happy with it. 😀

It lets me game on the machine, while also capturing the output (the video is in clone mode).

Cool. I ordered the one I linked from ebay. The wire is about 11 inches, which should be plenty to make it easy to plug the headphones in without standing or going to the back of the computer. 😎

I assume you've determined that it is definitely not your headphone wire? I would be tempted to open those speakers up and do a re-soldering job on the connector.

Definitely not the headphone wire. I thought of opening the speaker up as well, but when I saw how little the splitter cost compared to how much my speakers go for on ebay ($30), I thought I'd try the less invasive option first. These are a nice set of retro speakers with a good combination of retro look and sound quality:
