Ok, so my current build is NOT going well. Im currently trying to install a EVGA 680I SLI (early 07) Motherboard into a CoolerMaster CM690 II Advanced case (Late 2013). Everything went well until i tried to install the heatsink when i relized the case has no standoffs for screwing in the CPU Cooler. Theres just a large cutout directly behind the CPU. A friend mentioned that some older boards have a backplate to install. Am i missing that? I cant find any reference to this board having ever had one.

Are newer cases incomptible with older motherboards or something?

Cases do not have any stand-offs to mount coolers 😀

The hole you see in your case is to allow mounting coolers, that use back-plates, without removing the motherboard.

I don't know what cooler you have, but it seems that you're missing the back-plate and mounting screws?

Got any other coolers lying around? Push pin type coolers don't need back-plates.

I think you need a backplate on the mobo behind the heat sink.

In the USA, I can pick up an LGA775 CPU cooler brand new for about $10 and it will come with a backplate for the motherboard with it. Check it.

Some coolers require backplates, and some don't; it's not really a matter of the motherboard.

I once went through a lot of trouble trying to change the cooler on an old motherboard before I realized that it had a backplate stuck to the back, and that unless I pried it off, I wouldn't be able to use a different, push-pin cooler. What a headache that was.
