Is there any MIDI player that sounds like a Sound Blaster 16? I got an OPL-3 soundfont, but I must be missing the timidity++ CFG file, because everything sounds like the default Linux soundfont (ie, way too good for my nostalgic ears).

I don't remember my games with MT32 sounds, and I have this .MID rip of Master of Magic's music and it just sounds too... orchestral and good with the normal freepats soundfont.

Is there a way for it to sound more 16-bit? Does anyone have a mapping file for the OPL-3 soundfont (https://www.musical-artifacts.com/artifacts/15) ? Is there a specific player that comes with OPL-3-like sound out of the box?

Thanks for any help!

SB16 does not natively play MIDI, so it doesn't really have a singular distinct sound. Cards using the EMU8k synthesizer chip such as the AWE64 and AWE32 did play MIDI, of course, and their default soundfonts are available.

Yeah. Many games had their own specific soundfonts for playing MIDI files through the OPL3 chip. Creative's SBMIDI driver also had its own "soundfont" (OPL3 instrument data, mapped to standard MIDI instruments) but I don't know how you would find that.

Also, there's this: http://bisqwit.iki.fi/source/adlmidi.html from the venerable bisqwit which may be what you're looking for.

Edit: also see this: Windows, Doom, Apogee OPL3 Synthesizer.

Yes i'm sure the Windows driver will be useful for a Linux user.

🤣 leileilol, you're right. Sorry! But maybe adlmidi will work, since I think it has Linux binaries.

Thank you! I managed to compile this for Linux, and there's even a bank selection for Master of Magic. But sadly, it misses some sounds for some reason 😐 maybe my rip is incorrect or something.

Thanks again!
