You know those really generic looking explosions as seen on various games like Descent, Duke Nukem 3D, Command & Conquer, and Mechwarrior 2?

I'm looking for two in particular, one is a fiery looking one that's used as a looping fire animation in Mechwarrior 2 for burning destroyed buildings in the campaigns. This one is used in Gunmetal when RPV's explode, but it doesn't loop. I think this one is also used in UT2004's SPMA explosion effect I might try looking there when I can.

And the other is a... don't know how to describe the shape but a "smoke stack" like explosion I think I seen used in Descent 2. The explosion in question here is used in Gunmetal for debris, grenades and rockets exploding. I think a few robots in Descent 2 had this explosion sprite as well.

I'm trying to find these in 64x64 size with around 8 or so frames of animation.

If anybody knows where I can find a comprehensive library of stock explosion animations it'd be very appreciated!

These animations are probably as ubiquitous as Sound Ideas and are similarily licensed. It had a name, and I remember a magazine ad for this but can't place my finger on it

Try extracting them from games, like Half Life sprites.

I would do that if I knew how and had tools that worked.

I'm more curious of the source material itself as well.

DIV Games Studio had a tool that generated explosions.

I know that you are looking for those explosions, but maybe a similar explosion would be enough...

Never heard of "DIV Games Studio", would you have a example of what it's capable of doing?

Just google Half Life sprite editor 😀
Counter strike 1.6 has a lot of explosion sprites, there are also user made explosions. The origin of those is unknown to me, but they probably got made as special effects for some movies.
If you can't get a hang of it just download the tools from here: https://sites.google.com/site/gshltools/texture-tools
