I'm working on a YouTube video about Viper Racing, which won an Editor's Choice award from PC Gamer magazine when it debuted in late 1998.

Does anybody have a scan of that issue of PC Gamer? Google has turned up nothing useful.

You should say if you mean the UK or US version of the magazine, but anyway, I can't find either on http://www.oldgamemags.com/ sorry, but you can try https://archive.org/details/magazine_rack (how are they allowed to host so many copyrighted items?).

Edit: Actually, there's the December 1998 issue at:

read.oldgamemags.com/IBM-PC/PC%20Gamer% ... ture).pdf/

but I can't find mention of Viper Racing in it.

Can you remember what was on the cover of the magazine you mean? This issue has the Half-Life symbol on a yellow background.

I don't know - I've never actually seen the issue. All I know is that when Viper Racing was released it won a PC Gamer Editor's Choice award, so it must have been in late 1998 or possibly very early 1999.

I probably have the Swedish edition of that issue laying around if that is of any help. Should be same screenshots, but translated review.

Thanks Vetz, it needs to be English language, but can you tell me what month that issue was published?

I found it in the March 1999 edition. No Editor's Choice award. Review originally written by Matthew Pierce. Conclusion translates to: "Extremely difficult in the beginning, but very engrossing if you have the patience"

Thanks. I'm going to have to keep searching. Strange how difficult it is to find back issues of such a popular magazine.

I had forgotten there was an Australian version of PC GAMER, even though I have some of them, fortunately the one You are after.

Are you sure about that?

I checked PC Gamer's web site and didn't see any way to order back issues.

Imperious - thank you, I'll put that scan into the video. How would you like to be credited?

To be honest I've just done it to help, but if You want to credit me please keep it as short and simple as possible,
either a brief mention or just some text on the video.
I expect nothing other than the video to be informative and enjoyable, that's enough.

It actually gave me a good chance to clean out the shelves my magazines are on and have a quick look through them. I only bought a few
of those Australian PC Gamer issues as PC Powerplay came out shortly afterwards, and whilst the quality wasn't as good till after a year or
so, it was cheaper. I forgot at the time, but could try and dig up a review of Viper racing in PC Powerplay if You are interested.

Interesting! I always assumed that game was just a cheap licence cash-in (a la Ford Racing series or its type.) Had no idea the driving model was so advanced, especially for 1998. I'm gonna have to give it a try.

Also looking forward to the SGI Indy episode - used to have one of those. Probably the only vintage machine I really regret letting go of.

BTW this is the first episode of your show I've watched. Your voice over sounds *exactly* like those old advertising / promo videos from the era. "Now with the power of modern 3D accelleration and dynamic physics modelling, Viper Racing gives you unprecedented realism in your driving experience!" Don't know if that's intentional but I found it amusing. 😜

Viper Racing is my favorite driving game and I've been wanting to make a video about it for a long time. It really had a lot of depth and it's a shame Monster didn't take it further with sequels and expansions, but I guess they saw a wider market with Nascar licenses.

As for my voice, I'm not particularly comfortable with it but I try to articulate myself like an old-school radio journalist with "Mid-Atlantic" mannerisms for the sake of clarity. Most of my videos have been narrated by friends with better voices than mine.
