hi everyone, i'm new to glidos. i've just managed to run redguard properly (i had to use Red Baron's glide2x.dll and openglid.ini). in fullscreen it works kind of quick (normally i'd say) in windowed mode it's a little bit crappy (sloooow):/ the point is that in both modes i've got graphic glitches, which are extremely annoying (look at the picture) ... what should i do? my os is w2k (sp4), graphic gf4mx440 (drivers up to date, 66.73 or something), 256ram, athlon xp2000.

It may be related to the venerable glide2x.dll you're using. Red Baron's is recommended for old or embedded graphic chipsets with poor OpenGL support, but your MX440 should be able to cope with the latest OpenGlide version -- especially since you're using recent nVidia drivers (I recommend 66.93 btw).

ok i got openglide 0.09rc7 and it now works correctly (almost). THANK YOU:) i have also another question. how to run redguard with sound? i've installed VDMSound v2.0.4. when i run setsound.exe everything's fine (i can choose whatever i want and the setup accepts it). but when i try to run Gsetsound.exe it tells me that my sound card cannot be initialized (and i can't hear the sound sample). when i try to run the game (even without running gsetsound, only setsound with soundblaster compatible card selected) there's no sound too (i can see vdmsound loading in dos console). my soundcard is C-Media AC97.

Yes, good advice there on the graphics problem.

On the sound issue, I've had a mobo with C-Media AC97 and there were no problems with VDMSound. I'm a bit confused because I can't remember anything called Gsetsound.exe. I seem to remember the only issue being that you need to choose General Midi, rather than Sound Blaster, for Music support.

unfortunately it doesn't matter which soundcard in setsound.exe I select - there is still no sound or music. maybe i'm doin' something wrong? here's what i'm doing step by step :
1.i have redguard & glidos v1.31 installed, everything is working fine (exept for sound 😜)
2.i have VDMSound v2.0.4 installed correctly too
3. i run setsound.exe ("run with VDMS" command)
4.i choose "select&configure MIDI music driver" then, for example, "general midi" and then "attempt to configure sound driver automatically". the device is configured succesfully.
5. i do the same thing with digital audio driver but i select soundblaster compatible instead of general midi (as it's not there 😜 )
6. i select "done" and quit setsound.
7. i run glidos
8. i select redguard and "run the game"
9. the game is starting (in dos window i can see that VDMS is starting too )...
10...and there is still no sound at all 🙁

oh, i forgot! "gsetsound.exe" is windows version of sound configuring utility for redguard (the same that appears when installing the game). i receive errors no matter which soundcard i select but it's not necessary to configure it, isn't it?

I seem to be using SoundBlaster 16, AWE32, AWE64

Have you tried with glidos set to windowed mode? VDMSound will sometimes put up a dialog box that needs to be checked. Also redguard causes a warning box, to which you need to say "ignore".

yes i have tried both fullscreen and windowed modes. i know that i should press "ignore" in that dialog box, that's not the point. the point is that vdmsound is working for sure because without it i wouldn't be able to choose any soundcard in setsound.exe. it is also working when the game is starting. the game itself works, looks nice, but there's still no sound.

btw. selecting "soundblaster 16, awe32, awe64" in setsound still doesn't change anything 🙁 setsound accepts it (it accepts every soundcard i think) but the game looks as it doesn't know anything about options selected in setsound 🙁

Any possibility that you have installed Redguard twice, with Glidos using one version, and you using setsound.exe in the other? Probably a stupid suggestion, but its very difficult to think of a reason for what you are seeing.

Is it a straight install of Glidos, or a install of an old version over a new? Are you running as a user with admin privileges?

nope, redguard is installed only once and glidos install is fresh 🙁 i am running as administrator... it must be something else 😒 but i can't think of any reason and unfortunately i am not able to check it on the other computer for a while

Ah! Zero volume setting. That would be consistent with what you are seeing. Have a look at your sound card's mixing settings.

and again that's not the point 🙁 i mean, i've got my volume as high as possible and there is still no sound (i know, this sentence is getting boring:P). i have tried to run the game on my other computer (pIII 500, 256mb ram, riva tnt2, winxpPro) but i got "NTVDM.exe" error (it appears after clicking "ignore" in dialog box about redguard accesing the hard disk). any idea about what this stupid nvdtm would be and how to get past it?

The best I can do for you is suggest everything I can think of. You said your volume, as though that's one thing. You have checked your mixer?

Do you have any other DOS games you could try?

This is strange because Redguard has always been one of the least problematic games for me.

what do you mean by mixer? windows volume control (with wave, sw synth, cdplayer and all that crap) accesed from the toolbar (or soundcard options)?

Yes. So everything fine there. I really have no idea. Presumably you've tried reinstalling after removing every trace of Glidos, VDMSound and Redguard?

that's exactly what i have tried a few minutes ago and... TADADADAM!! after uninstalling glidos and redguard and installing them again the game started with sound without ANY troubles. i really don't have a clue what was wrong in the previosu install but it doesn't matter unless the problem continues 😀 well, THANK YOU VERY MUCH for your time and effort, i finally got it working 😀 let me ask the final question - what about thic NTVDM.exe error? i would like to play redguard on my other computer (in my own room with speakers instead of headphones) and as i said befeore i receive this wierd error...

Really great news. I've known complete reinstalls work in many occasion. I have absolutely no idea why it should help.

On the ntvdm.exe thing I'm afraid I have no idea either. Any info present with the error?

Try to set your sound as Sound Blaster Pro in setsound.exe (both midi and digital). I have Realtek AC'97 and this setting work for me. I'm using VDMSound 2.1.0beta.

oups, I was late...

it just says ntvdm.exe made illegal operation and will be closed and that log is being made...

Sorry about digging up the thread, but I am getting exactly the same problem. Seems the glidos software is just interfering with windows in some way. I use Windows XP SP2, but qrpiech uses W2K, so it isn't a specific OS problem apparently. 😕
