Good luck. Old ford trucks can be a pain to work on. Not that there bad, just worn out and beat up. Hopefully it was taken care off and it's not rusted out.
Just don't put a 04-07 5.4 in it. If you do put 5.4 in it put new plugs in it before dropping it in.

So what's wrong with it?

EGR valve is iffy, alot of carbon buildup in the throttle body, brakes need to be bleed badly, needs 2 rear tires.

It runs and drives but will stall out if it idels so I have to hold the throttle down at a stop to keep it above 1200RPM or it dies

Also I'd be looking at a 97-03 5.4, so its a simple bolt in with computer from the scrap yard. Being in texas alot of engines dont rot right away

Sounds like an air/fuel mix porblem. My family has a 96 ranger with egr problems and does the same stuff.

As for brakes, that's easy if all they need it bleeding.
Just remember, a older car with problems can eat you alive with all its nickel and dimes you spend on it.

We had a 98 Expedition with the 5.4, traded it in at 250k and it was still running. Never had a single issue with it, bought it with 90k on it.

This bad boy has 351k on its second motor. Previous owner was a general contractor so it was rode hard and put up wet.

General repairs to make outside of required for reliabilty.
Heater core
AC compressor
Shocks
Driver seat
New carpet
Paint
Dent repair
New bed liner
Radio

Luckily its crank windows and manual locks otherwise I'm sure id have issues

Clean up the carbon buildup, replace the O2 sensors and the mass airflow sensor, and it probably is fixed.
If it's oldskool enough, it might not have a 'fly-by-wire' throttle, but a cable connected to the throttle body, and a simple potentiometer on there to get feedback on the throttle position. This can also be a problem for idling. If it's worn out, the ECU can't detect the idle position properly.

It's probably one of these things, or some combination.

Go for the 5.4 if you need the power, but a Ford six cylinder is usually very inexpensive to operate.

yes i know its cheaper than an 8, but I'm just a good ole boy from the country, and a V8 is the only engine I consider worth having. I also prefer trucks to SUV's or Cars because a Truck says I'm a Man

A V10 could fit maybe, but honestly I'm gonna be junk yard shopping for a wrecked 2003 F-150 Lightening, with the SuperCharged 5.4 @ 500HP because I need 500HP 🤣

That will either be very fun or very costly. I driven one of these super changed ford Harley trucks, fun for a few miles, then your out of gas. 🤣
Just make sure you have the frame/body in good shape and beef up the brakes and suspension to keep it safe. you'll have to change the suspension if your putting a V8 in it to begin with.

Why a V8 when you already got a V6? Not enough power on the V6? Not an expert in US topography but isn't Texas pretty much flat?

I'm wondering if you're doing it for necessity or you must like your Cars powerful and doing 10 miles per gallon.

It's a Texas thing more excatly. A V8 sounds mean, it can pull, it's fast, and the vibrations it makes are soothing

Things are very different in the USA with cars, more so in Texas. In Texas and around the USA as well, Owning a truck is a manly thing and having the biggest meanest nastily truck makes you more of a man in some circles. Its the same with making your car faster. In many circles having the fastest car makes you more of a man or a better driver.
I know it sounds dumb and it really is. If was given the chance of driving a new VW caddy over a 150 or any other big American truck I go for the caddy. But we don't really have good small trucks over here any more. There is to much red tape with such trucks that no one will make them and very few will buy them as they cost a arm and leg to insure.

That being said not all V8's get 10mgh, I been driving a 2004 f-150 with a 5.4 and it gets around 18mpg. The roads here are mostly straight and highway with speed limits around 70mph. so if you stay out of the city's you can get good mpg.
my family had a mustang wit had V8 that got about 25mpg too. I think it was a 4.7. But it was not a safe car to drive every day. (race car) Funny thing is my car has a v6 and gets less MPG then the v8 mustang we had. 🤣 Wait plays a major factor in a cars MPG.

Got it figured out. Cam sensor and cam stabilizer need replacing

After years of messing around with a old rust bucket to another is to stop trying to modify things and just do cheap fixes while saving up for the nicer things in life. I guess it helps you don't have to deal with snow and salt killing your ride though.

The V6 in them old fords with a manual weren't the worst things though. Quite a bumpy ride in 94 F150 from memory.
