Hi,

I'm having problems getting the sound in System Shock I to run optimally. Basically, what it does is speed up and slow down, and then speed up and slow down, ad infinitum. Rather maddening. Everything else works fine (although I take a big framerate hit when I go to 640x480 res), and the game is stable.

I've tried using every sound card option that the install will allow (Gen. Midi and the two Rolands sound better than any of the Soundblaster emulations), but I still get that loopy sound. Any ideas?

I'm running 2 gig P4, WinXP Pro Service Pack 2, DirectX 9, 768 megs of RAM, 256 megs of video RAM, SoundMAX integrated digital audio, dos4gw 1_97.

You could try the "Cap DOS Timer Frequency" "Try to reduce CPU Usage" and "DMA Servicing" in the .VLP properties.

I don't know how well DOS32A works with SS1 but you may want to try that too, also search these forums and see if other people found fixes.

Thank you sir, your second suggestion fixed the problem. I set the "Try to reduce CPU usage" slider to about half-way between Low & Med. usage, and the sound played just fine. Again, thanks for the suggestion!
