Just some advice for anyone else trying to do this. I was trying to get Quake 1 to work on my retro system (voodoo 5) with mp3 music. This obviously requires a modern GLQuake replacement which includes a minefield of other things like graphical mods etc etc, I just watched to keep the game as stock as possible but with some added niceties.

My advice is using Requiem: https://www.quaddicted.com/engines/requiem

It is a modern replacement with lots of bug fixes, but keeps the game as stock as possible, plus the added mp3 sound I wanted. "reQuiem is a custom OpenGL Quake engine for Windows and Linux. It's designed for maximum compatibility with all things Quake - past, present and future. It's fast, reliable, and easy to configure. In short: it fixes what was broken, improves what needed improving, and leaves the rest alone."

Here is a link to the steam community with a great guide to getting music to work: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filede … s/?id=118401000
This guy also includes high quality mp3 and ogg versions of the sound tracks.

Also it works well under Windows 2000. Every other engine I tried didn't work or crashed out due to needing a newer windows. So this version was really nice. Hope this guide helps anyone else looking to get mp3 music on a retro system with a modern client.

Not really, a winmm wrapper will work:

That's if you want to have your cd in the drive spinning around... Also requiem has all of the advantages due to bug fixes and code enhancements without changing the content or gameplay.

You should read the article I linked to, it's about a program that allows you to redirect CDDA playback to MP3 files. Provided there is a crack available for GLQuake/WinQuake then there's no reason to have your a CD in your optical drive spinning around.

Of course source ports have lots of advantages, I'm just saying if you wanted the 100% authentic GLQuake/WinQuake experience without having to rely on an optical disc drive, you could.

You should check out the Quake DOS port QDOS, which brings most of the modern improvements of Quake source ports to MS-DOS and ancient PCs. OGG/WAV soundtrack, 3D acceleration, mod support!

I can't remember if QuakeSpasm works under Win9x or not.
