Response to my ad for a machine I have for sale:

"What's an ATI Radeon? I don't know that make. Is it like a Sapphire?"

I once had someone ask me if the Diamond Stealth 64 card I was selling had 64 MB of memory.

Is this too much voodoo?

Was asked, if a TNT2-M64 would run Minecraft on Win10.

Overheard a conversation the other day where they were talking about older versions of Windows before 9x and NT4 and wether they have a GUI or not. Think about it.

I pointed out that technically MS-DOS v4+ has a GUI.

Could probably run Minetest on Win98 though!

"DOS? What is it?" asked my date.

And she works in a software development company.

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Every time my son sees me playing an old FPS, his first question is ALWAYS, "Does it have multiplayer?"

I was shocked to see him (after owning the game for months) finally start the single player campaign on Black Ops III.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Got some good bait there. What did you tell them? Could have some fun at there expense.

But remember ati has been gone for awhile. People that are new to computers despite there age may not know what they were. If someone in there 40s got into computers today they probably would not know what ati was at first.

Haha, nah I didn't reply. To be honest the actual email I got was vastly less polite and grammatically poor than my paraphrase of it here. I have a lot of stuff for sale online at the moment and when I get messages like that it's a pretty good indication that they will never, ever, result in the sale of said items, so I don't waste my time. :p

(Instead I come on here and rant about it because that's clearly not wasting my time *at all*.)

Yeah, I respect that a lot of folks just weren't into computers during the heyday of the video card wars & GHz rush. It's more a comment to poke fun at myself than those people. The machine in question is a Core2 Duo with a Radeon HD2400 XT, so it may well be an "AMD" and not "ATI" but I wrote ATI in the advert out of habit.

ATi will always be ATi to me... even after acquisition by AMD-owned or otherwise.

For a second there I thought that might somehow be legitimate box art.

I was talking with someone about emulators and a boy about 10-12 was listening in. When I mentioned the Nintendo 64, he asked "That's like a third generation system, right?"

Already had this happen to me a few times and I am only in my twenties 😢
It greatly disturbs me sometimes when people in a tech college are still clueless about common 90s and 2000s hardware.

Happened to me too. They were not aware of P-Pro's, 3dFX and all the old bus systems.
Systems like VLB, MCA and EISA. IRQ's and DMA's was like speaking martian to them.

Me, too. As a kid I had a hot tempered discussion with a boy on the playground (a sports field, actually) who wouldn't believe Win 2.03 did exist.
Our talk started quite calmly when we talked about our computers, but for some reason he got mad when I mentioned it.
I remember that I had to go home and show him my dad's original W2.03 box, because I think he said I was ignorant or a liar.. 🙄
No idea why some people have to fret over trifles.

Hehe... I was nearly punched in the face, around 2003, when I stated that Windows was not the only system in use.
That angry dude, refused to listen and understand, that Unix and Linux combined, were more widely used in the server world.
He was all like: "Windows is the only system they use in the industry and in the corporate world". And I was like: "No".
(we were both in the same class, studying computer technology)
