This section is about old software on old hardware, I wasn't sure where to ask about modern software on old hardware/operating systems, so I'm posting it here 😉

I managed to run Steam on Windows 2000 (and other modern software), after applying some modifications (updates and extended kernel): you just need to follow steps someone described here 1-6 http://retro.remotecpu.com/win2k.html

You will get bunch of steamwebhelper.exe errors after launching Steam, so just set all user access to DENY for this file (after you start steam).

As you can see, it works... here is a video of CS:S gameplay https://drive.google.com/open?id=0Bz5QRn_CvDR … Uzgzc1lzNUhkQVE

The problem is, it doesn't work most of time. Actually, in this video everything is fine, but when I try to launch another game, it gives me an error when I start to move the mouse ("hl2.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows. You will need to restart the program") . So, most of time, you can launch any Source engine game and play by using keyboard, but as soon as you touch the mouse, it crashes (I can't recreate the condition when mouse miraculously worked). Also, I wasn't able to launch Half-life 1 (goldsrc), nothing happens, sometimes a message saying that OpenGL didn't work and it will try the software mode (still doesn't work).

I attach some screenshots from error log (when CS:S crashed). Maybe someone will have some ideas how to fix it, maybe I should post that to http://www.msfn.org forum because all of these unofficial updates are being developed there, but I also liked to show you my experience with running unsupported software on Windows 2000 😉

I remember leileilol posting on their forums a few years ago, about trying to use Steam on a K6-2 under Windows XP. If I remember correctly, it would crash in a similar manner when it shouldn't have (I don't think there was any demand for SSE or the like). I was genuinely curious to see why this happened, but the circlejerk was just too strong with the users there, answers never deviated from the likes of "HAHAHA UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM WTF NOOB" 🤣 .

What I'm getting at is that Valve are not especially helpful with trying to run their software on slightly outdated systems, so I hope you figure this out! 😀

Meh, Win2000 is not Win9x, you can actually run new stuff onto it, especially with BlackWingCat's Extended Kernel. It's not too hard, now try making it run under Win9x and you get mad propz...at least from me 😀
I successfully ran GTA IV on Win2000 on a 6600GT AGP, by pretty much just installing the mentioned Extended Kernel and GeForce drivers from BlackWingCat's website.

Valve doesn't actually check the forum, its all user help, and yes most users are unhelpful
