Is the Milliways subforum for discussion unrelated to computers?

Milliways
Announcements, advice, random banter, unrelated discussion, et cetera.

Anyway, this topic is about as unrelated as it comes. I have noticed a ridiculous amount of bigfoot-related (sasquatch) videos popping up online recently. I was simply wondering what people not involved in bigfoot pop-culture, e.g. computer geeks, think about this topic. Is it just a joke to get youtube views and subscribers? Or is there more to it? Anyone have an encounter story with these things? I do not have a stance in one direction or the other, but was wondering about the mass quantity of encounter stories surfacing and if this is just an elaborate hoax.

It's not a hoax and it's not real. Just the eye playing tricks on the mind at dusk or at night. Pretty much the same story as with ghosts.

I cannot say I have noticed any "mass quantity of encounter stories surfacing" as of late. Perhaps you clicked on one and some algorithm decided that you wanted to see more.

The Patterson Gimlin film is pretty hard to refute, especially when you watch the stabilized versions. All it takes is one real sasquatch to prove it exists. There could be hundreds of fakes or mis-reportings. But one real one is enough to prove they exist. And IMO, that one is captured on the Patterson-Gimlin film.

While there are certainly online youtube scripts feeding you more videos depending on what you've watched, I did not notice the mass quantity of bigfoot material some years back when I looked into this. There has really been an explosion of material lately, e.g. Animal Planet's Finding Bigfoot series, History Channel's MonsterQuest, the hundreds of "bigfoot investigator" youtube channels with new video "evidence" of this animal. There's tonnes of bigfoot talk radio shows now, like Bigfoot hotspot radio, Sasquatch Chronicles, etc. There was also a documentary by Leonard Nimoy about Sasquatch. I did not see most of this on Youtube 8 years ago.

I did not think anything of this topic until 2009. My wife and I were doing a large canoe circuit which took 8 days and required portages between lakes. We started at a campground at the end of a narrow dirt road. This particular side of the lake is quite the distance from any paved road. We arrived at around 5 PM and setup tent. The campground was vacant, but was full of abandoned tents, rafts, and various other camping gear. I had never seen such extreme abandonment in the Canadian woods. It looked as if a bear had torn apart the previous camper's gear and they fled the scene. I spent an hour and cleaned up the garbage by bundling it all up and moving it off into the brush. I normally take trash abandonment home with me, but this amount of gear was too much.

We made dinner and went to bed in the tent. I did not sleep well that night. There was a beaver which had been splashing all night long keeping me awake. The campsite was on a lake. If you have never head a beaver working, well, it sounds like someone throwing a small boulder into the lake. The beaver makes this splash with its tail. All this splashing noise was sort of making me nervous, so I kept having to pee, about every 2 hours. Our tent has a vestibule, with earth as the floor and this is where I was urinating. Anyway, just before the morning light, at around 4:30 - 5:00 AM, I awoke from my crummy sleep again to hear the sound of projectiles being thrown at my car. It was somewhat periodic, about one throw every 60 seconds. It sounded like pine cones, sticks, or maybe small rocks. My wife heard it as well. The odd thing was that nothing was hitting our tent, only our vehicle. And we had one of those huge stand-up tents which was much larger than our car. This throwing went on for about 15 minutes, until the point in which I could not stand it anymore. My vehicle has one of those panic buttons which sounds the horn every few seconds. I hit that button and let it sound (echo, rather) for a few minutes. Then I emerged from the tent to see what was throwing stuff at my car. I found nobody and no animal. I looked up in the trees and didn't see anything. I went back into the tent and slept for another hour or more and there was no further banging sound on my car.

I remember reading many years earlier that bigfoot liked to tease campers like this, especially when they don't want you in their territory. I didn't mention it to my wife because I didn't want her to be scared on the rest of the circuit. When we got home I looked things up online and didn't come across all the youtube videos on this subject matter that I am today.

At all the other campgrounds on the canoe circuit, there were no further incidents. Also, all the other campgrounds were overflowing with people. I got the impression that people were avoiding the campground which we started the circuit on. We left our car parked at the original ransacked campground as we headed out on the canoe circuit. The car was still there and intact when we returned. And there still was nobody camping at this campground upon our return.

I still don't know what was throwing projectiles at our vehicle. If it were some troubled kids playing a joke, I certainly did not hear them come in. We were a long way off the main road. The pranksters would have had to walk a long long way in the middle of the night for this little bit of fun. Or have been canoeing in the middle of the night then remaining completely quiet. I was also wondering if perhaps this time of morning is when pine cones fall from the trees. However, why did no cones fall on our tent? It was right next to our car. And why did the projectiles stop after I hit the panic button? Also, my car has a basket on the top. There were no cones or anything inside that basket. It really sounded like something was being thrown at the side of the doors and onto the hood. I am not saying that a sasquatch was throwing stuff at our vehicle, but this incident is what got me started looking into it and there wasn't much out there in 2009. Now, in 2017, there is an overwhelming amount of videos, material, and "research" groups out there. After listening to some strories, it seems that most people who have had encounters with what they refer to as sasquatch that they also have objects thrown at them, like pine cones, sticks, and rocks, especially when they are not wanted in a particular region, and at times, when they (the humans) are urinating in their territory.

I should also point out that I have been in the outdoors for most of my pre-children life. I have done several other canoe circuits in Canada, and have been backpacking up mountains for extended periods. I have had a grizzly bear and cubs walk through our camp and have walked right next to black bears fattening up on blue berries off a wilderness trail, but never had a projectile of any sort hit my vehicle like this.

Everytime I watch that, I see a man in an ape suit. However there have been a lot of analysis done on it by various PhD "professionals" in subjects like anthropology, anatomy, and filming and believe it is not a hoax. Personally, I don't know. There have been quite a bit of videos like the Patterson Gimlin film surfacing on youtube. What I find amazing are all the eye witness stories on the various radio programs, .e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYYAFdOFyfw , which can describe exactly what these alleged beasts look like. But these are all from bigfoot sources. I was more or less wondering if anyone out of the field has had any experience with this subject.

There is also the research done by former police officer David Paulides concerning missing people in our parks that has me wondering about taking my kids to the woods. Paulides calls his book Missing 411, or something like that.

Interesting story. I've noticed there have been a few documentary series on Bigfoot & yeti shown here in the UK over the last few months. The general consensus seems to be a species of bear.
I have a theory that these kind of things come in cycles, UFO's for a few years, loch ness monster, yeti. One successful show spawns a ton of "me too" programmes until the fad dies down, of course now with you tube the whole thing is far more dynamic & faster reacting.

I wouldn't be in the least bit surprised if yeti/bigfoot is a real animal. I think it would be sad to think that there are no animals left to be discovered.

Best,
Chris

I was reading on Wiki that the Bili Ape was folklore until it was proven to exist in 2006 in the Congo. They are 5-6' tall and look like giant chimpanzees. Similarly, wiki mentions that the gorilla wasn't proven until around 1861. Perhaps there are more not-yet-studied great apes out there, perhaps not so extinct gigantopithecus apes from times past.

Back in the 90s Britain was supposed to be overrun with cryptid big cats. There were documentaries, news articles, internet gossip. Then the obsession faded and it was never heard of again.

The "chupacabra" thing in Mexico also seems to have disappeared.

eta: Wikipedia even has an article on the episode: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/British_big_cats

Even if they are not extinct, at the rate we are progressing they will be soon anyway 🤣 . Loss of habitat, pollution and what not.

Seriously, It is just my humble opinion that if these (part-intelligent!!!)species don't want to be found, I guess then they are best left alone in their 'territory'. Unfortunately there lies the 'conflict' as always between humans and other species. Our population & territory keeps on increasing and naturally others' keep on decreasing, aided not in small measures by our greed(by means of commodifying everyting), of course. And this does nothing for the balance of this wonderful world and its intricate workings, where most of the species are dependent on each other at a level still not completely understood by us or conveniently ignored perhaps. The situation is pretty ominous and it doesn't bode well for everyone's future 😢 . The sad thing is I don't see a positive development out of this precarious situation without a global awareness arising out of some catastrophical event far exceeding those already in our memories. Maybe too late 😵 .

Sorry for the off-topic rant and for being a pessimist(or realist whatever).

Given that everyone is carrying a camera these days.... that can take REALLY good pictures and video.

NJ did have a bear that walked on its hind legs, but it appears to have been killed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pedals_(bear)

The attachment bigfoot-elf-salinger.jpg is no longer available

ThinkThunker is a pretty good YT channel where the guy analyzes supposed bigfoot videos and uses things like scale to surrounding trees and body/facial proportions to validate or debunk.
Here's one that I thought was pretty compelling. Short, but fairly clear video of a white bigfoot with analysis of facial proportions compared to humans:

ThinkerThunker has some interesting videos. I like the one where an IMAX crew accidentally shot footage of a big black pipedal thing chasing some elk. There is also some interview with that IMAX camera man on youtube somewhere.

This one is weird - a predator type thing taken in the woods of Washington state, which may just be camera lighting issues. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o6F5UqItf2c

There is another guy who analyses these videos, I think his YT is BigfootTony or something like that. PacWest BigFoot, Sasquatch Central, etc also tell some interesting stories on YT and have interviews with these people with alleged encounters. For some reason there has been an explosion in this topic recently.

According to the wiki article, the guy jumped out of an airplane with a non-operational "demo" parachute. I suspect he either froze to death upon exiting the aircraft, or died upon impact to the ground. His body was possibly eaten by wildlife and his parachute likely buried by the Mt. Saint Helen's eruption debris.
