Hello fellow VOGONers!

I want to make a build that should be able to play Glide 9x games flawlessly (2x VoodooII in SLI), but also have a Windows 2000 installation in order to be able to cope with some newer tasks eg. listening to web radio etc.

Till now I have the following build for this task:

Tualatin Celeron 1100MHz (with a slocket)
ASUS P2B with latest beta BIOS
Geforce 2 GTS 32MB
2x VoodooII in SLI
3com 100mbit LAN PCI
Soundblaster Live! SB0060 PCI

In order to be able to listen to web radio, the original 256MB of system ram was clearly not enough, as it requires win 2k, a more modern browser and flash player. So I upgraded it to 768MB and applied the RLOEW's memory patch.
And the poor Tualeron still struggles.

The question is:
Now that I have got in my hands an ASUS A7V600 (VIA KT600, 400MHz FSB, all socket A athlons supported, as well as 2x SATA), should I replace the whole build with that? And what kind of Athlon XP processor would be appropriate for my needs?

Originally, I thought that Athlon XP was too new for Win 9x and glide, but now that I gave it a second thought, it officially supports Win 98SE and I didn't use any ISA slot in the first place, so why not?
I'm listening to your opinions!

the real question is how much actual cpu power does your web radio need? have you tried it on somthing higher end than what you need like a pentium 4 just to check the cpu usage?

whats the cpu usage on the celeron while it's running?

I have no idea about web radio, but Socket A is terrific for Windows 98. One challenge is power draw, it pays to check the lists and pick one that's not to thirsty. Also check out the Duron, they are quite lovely also.

I would grab a XP-M Barton, since they are supposedly the best binned K7s ever made, and underclock+undervolt the crap out of it. But the big problem is bad caps of that era of computing is the worst of all time.

EDIT: Found something useful about the power consumption about the XP-M, even at stock unoptimized it's surprisingly not a lot:

Actually I have an old Duron (900MHz). I tested the motherboard with that.
Web radio struggles to load but after that when you don't do anything else with the computer it plays without hiccups.
Maybe I got fascinated because I never owned in the past an Athlon XP. I also would like to have more modern hardware that is less expensive to replace in case of failure (eg sata hdd, normal socket motherboard, ddr1 ram).
I could also use the usb2.0 in windows 2000 and maybe pair the voodoos with something like a gf4ti gpu. 😀

But above all, I'm interested in the voodoos health. They are not going to melt with that setup, are they?

The mobile bartons are interesting. Even my old duron is getting really hot in there!

I may try installing and using 98se with the hardware I currently have and see if they play well. What are your suggestions?

Go with an XP Barton, make sure the case is well ventalated, make sure you have air flow directed at the voodoo 2's, and have fun

Okay, I'll try it. Ordered a Barton 3200+. Let's see!
