What a purchase! I just bought an IBM PS/2 Model 60 tower for 50$. It was listed locally and there was hardly anyone interested. I thought it would score higher price, but no.

It's a 286 processor (PGA package) @ 10mhz. I don't know if there are any interesting expansions. It comes with 2(!) IBM mono CRT monitors and original Model M Keyboard (silver label).

I like the old PS/2towers as well (model 80's, 60's 65sx and 95). There are some decent MCA cards you can install as well as CPU upgrades. Wish I had a nice mono IBM monitor for them.

Mine came with 2 mono crt's but I wish it was a colour one.

By processor card do you mean that this system can be upgraded to something past 286@10MHz? Thought it was not possible 😀

There are the CPU upgrades that plug into the CPU socket like the Kingston upgrades listed above, and there are MCA cards (386) that plug into a MCA slot and take over the system made my McMaster or MicroMaster whatever they are called.

A week ago I made a post in this thread about a very expensive Socket 939 motherboard I bought on Ebay, the motherboard cost me 80 euro.

I asked if anyone wanted to take a guess what Socket 939 motherboard I think is worth that kind of money but no one dared (-d+c). 😁

Today I got the motherboard and here it is! The DFI LanPARTY CFX3200 ATI (AMD) RD580 motherboard! In my opinion this is the second most valuable/rare Socket 939 motherboard after the DFI LanPARTY nF4 SLI-DR Venus Limited Edition (but they are not necessarily second best and best).

As often with Ebay, never trust what the store selling the item says...

Even when buying from a large store with only good feedback you can still get an item in less than stellar condition. Ebay should not let sellers use "Potato photos"!

When a store writes stuff like this I'm going to make a noise when I get an item with damages.

This capacitor does seem to have some issues with its "optischer Zustand"! It looks even worse IRL as the image dosn't show just how deformed it actually is.

Got a free case off craigslist to put my PIII 1Ghz build into and ended up getting some decent P4 stuff. It came with an ASUS P4PE board with RAID controller, SB Live 24-Bit, an FX 5200. But what was really sweet was a P4 HT 3.06 533Mhz. So, I put my 6800 GS in there instead and i'll wait for another case to put my PIII into. Then I head to the thrift store and got even luckier. Found two latitudes for 2 dollars each. A D630C that POSTs and a D620 that's dead. Gonna get batteries, chargers, caddies and a new MB to fix them up. I also found a xircom realport lan/56k to go with my C810 since it had to have those features removed to make room for wifi. Total spent was 6USD.

I'm installing Windows XP at the moment and I'm going to do some stability testing. Even if the motherboard turns out to be working prefectly which I think is likely you do not expect to get a motherboard with a capacitor this deformed by physical violence when buying a motherboard costing €80 from an Ebay store. The capacitor will have to be replaced sooner or later even if it's for no other good reason than a peace of mind and that means replacing all 5 of the same kind. I think asking for an €20 refund is reasonable.

You should have seen the message I sent to the store who sold me a beat up Intel PR440FX motherboard with a memory module littered with short circuits from physical damage. The memory module went up in smoke when I tested the motherboard! It seems many of these Ebay stores do not store their items in a proper way, just stacking unprotected motherboards on shelves is a bad idea.

In the end I only asked for a £20 refund out of the £75 I had paid, £10 for the memory and £10 for the hassle. I'm a very reasonable guy, a typical Swede you might say! 😁

This will be the second time from this same store and that is out of three items total... The other defect item from the same store was an AWE32 with a short circuit muting the EMU8000, I found the short and fixed it after I got a partial refund. There is a thread about this experience here on the forum.

When you present your store as a serious business with quality control and you say you are only selling (expensive) inspected thoroughly tested items you will be held to a much higher standard than "Ebay Vlad" from the Ukraine selling the same items but truthfully describing them as old motherboards from god knows where only tested so far as "POSTing to BIOS".

Thanks, I managed to win this off the bay for £22 shipped which i think is a very fair price. The ram module is only 8mb but i'm sure i have a 32mb stick floating about and certainly have 16mb modules.

Love those XT machines! Hard to get in Europe, though.

The picture does a really bad job showing the deformation as it lacks the depth needed, one side of the cap is pushed in perhaps 5 mm. A few of the other larger caps also show damage so I think stuff has been stacked on top of this motherboard. I think it was probably a huge pile of motherboards with the damage to the cap done by another motherboards attached heat sink or something like that.

The motherboard seems to be working just fine but the first response from the seller was that all hardware sold is inspected and tested and that the motherboard was spotless when they shipped it. Now when I know about the damage I can see it in the low quality picture they used on Ebay...

My second message to the store which sold me the motherboard was a little bit more harsh than the first and I have now asked for a 20 euro refund out of the 80 euro I paid. I don't know if I will involve Ebay or Pay Pal in this, I think I perfer to just shame them on the Internets if they continue to play dumb.

Just picked up one of these on ebay.

Nvidia 7950 GX2. Two 7950GTs in one card. This is going into my fast Win98/Windows XP build along with my P4 Cedar Mill. Whilst 98 wont recognise one of the cards, it's still fast with just one of them operating in it's own right. Of course XP will recognise both.

Sometimes that even happens during shipping to the reseller. When I worked at staples we had to pile everything into a single gaylord and ship it off to the "electronics recycler". Desktops and CRTs were too big for me to sneak home and it was just painful to see what happened to them.

Because screw calling PCIe mobos and sdram era machines retro, I picked up an empty chassis from Northgate Computer Systems.

It will be converted to operate as the CPU for a dedicated ContrALTO machine once I can source the appropriate portrait CRT monitor. The emulator will load images from 5.25" Syquest cartridges.
