Generally speaking, Win98 yes, DOS not so much. PCI sound cards have a checkered history with DOS compatibility.

PCI sound cards depend heavily on motherboard chipsets including certain compatibility features to work well in DOS. PC/PCI headers are generally the most compatible way for a PCI sound card to support legacy DOS audio. The i865 was pretty much the last Intel chipset to include features like DDMA (PC/PCI was long gone), so support might not be all that great.

With chipsets Intel 865G and 875P, I was not able to get the SBPro emulation working in MS-DOS mode. However, as DOOM runs under Windows, everything should work fine. But regarding DOS compatibility, at least for this chipset, there are better PCI soundcards, I guess.

They still had ISA bus support in the chipset (the first prerequisite for sideband technologies), but sometimes wouldn't work due to other missing compatibility features, or would only work with a hacked initialization tool (with the proper chipset PCI ID included). I've heard that some have had more success with ESS Solo 1 cards or (like Phil) with Vortex 2 cards. Also, you can try getting DSDMA working via the TSR.

From my experience the ESS Solo-1 is a great choice for VIA/AMD but not Intel chipset. In fact there is no perfect card, it all depends on your needs. But, without knowing your favorite games and to cover as many DOS games as possible, I would highly recommend a: Forté Media FM801-AU!

I managed to get sound in Dos games working very nicely with a Aureal Vortex 2 on my Asus P4P800dlx. Sblive was no go.
I only played around with this just to see if it was possible, I have better older mobos for Dos games, but if this is all You have,
then go for it.

For me it's working great in DOS. Motherboard: Abit IS7 (Intel 865PE), CPU: Pentium 4 2800Mhz Norhwood (FSB 800), soundcard: Generic Yamaha724 PCI
Only game I cannot get to work is Pinball Illusion, and some demoscene productions.

However this require some playing with BIOS settings and choosing "right" PCI slot. If someone is interested I can write here what I've changed.

1) VLSI SCAMP /286@20 /4M /CL-GD5422 /CMI8330
2) i420EX /486DX33 /16M /TGUI9440 /GUS+ALS100+MT32PI
3) i430FX /K6-2@400 /64M /Rage Pro PCI /ES1370+YMF718
4) i440BX /P!!!750 /256M /MX440 /SBLive!
5) iB75 /3470s /4G /HD7750 /HDA

OK. Card is in PCI-2 Slot. I've read somewhere on this forum that PCI IRQ (native mode) and ISA IRQ (legacy mode) should be different.
Moreover ISA IRQ must be 5, and I've decided to assign 11 to PCI IRQ.

I don't remember how I've figured out which PIRQ matches which PCI SLOT, maybe it was 'trial and error' method, maybe found on the net.

Advanced BIOS Features:
Hyper -Threading Technology - Disabled
APIC Mode - Disabled

PnP/PCI Configurations
Resources Controlled By - Manual
IRQ Resources
IRQ-5 assigned to - Reseved
IRQ-7 assigned to - Reserved

PIRQ_4 Use IRQ No. - 11 (rest of them is set to Auto)

Below some photos.

Now I have the card and it works great in doom on Win98SE. 😀 Later I will try running in dos mode but I don't see any point to run it on pure dos when the game work fine on Win98SE

THX for tutorial.
