I finally solved the 'getting stuck' issue. Apparently it was not F-Secure in my case. Instead, it was the AMD FirePro GPU in the laptop. Its drivers lock the system up (they never worked very well when plugging or unplugging monitors either).
The solution was to completely uninstall the device and all drivers and AMD software, then do the upgrade.
I suppose this is why Dell does not list my particular laptop (M2800 Precision) in their compatibility list: http://www.dell.com/support/article/us/en/19/ … -update?lang=en
It's not easy for your average user to get the update working.
Perhaps when AMD finally fixes the driver issues (I tried it both with the latest drivers from AMD's site, where I can specifically select 'Dell M2800', and with the latest drivers that Dell offers on their site, neither worked), the update can be installed without any special operations. And perhaps then Dell will list it as 'tested'.
