I've just finished a new build, a Pentium II 400mhz. It has an AGP slot, and PCI as well.
It's currently running an S3 Savage4 graphics card which is interesting, having its own API and all, but a bit too glitchy, Starseige has some graphical artifacts and Unreal has some strangeness even with the MeTaL API.
I wanted to swap it out for a Voodoo 3 3000 for glide compatibility (since I'm targeting late 1990s era games, primarily). Unfortunately theyre a bit pricey, in the realm of $100AUD and that's a bit more than I am willing to pay for a card that I'm not even sure is going to work.
If I do play anything more modern than 1999 or so it'll probably be at 800x600. Crimson Skies is fine at this resolution currently.
I've found it a bit difficult to track down TNT2 cards that aren't M64s, which seem to be 99% of those available. I had one back in the day because of budget reasons, wasn't happy with it so I'm avoiding those.
What other cards would you guys recommend as options? Ie. fairly available, cheap enough to take a risk on, and with good compatibility for 1995-2000 era gaming (win98 and DOS)?
