Win2k is always nice, and I do I run a system with it but depending one what games you are going to play (if any), you'll run into some compatibility issues. Usually they are simple fixes but other games like Need For Speed High Stakes for example, won't run at all or with optimal settings (Glide).

I am also in the process of doing my first Slot A build (as in, the CPU/RAM/Motherboard are in the mail!) which will go with Windows 98SE. It's only a 550MHz CPU but I think I'll be able to get a 750MHz chip from another forum. I'll be putting a TNT2, 9600XT and possibly Geforce FX 5700 in it. I hope (with the 750MHz chip) it will be a big upgrade over my 450MHz PII I used to have.

Indeed 2k is nice. Far more stable then 9x. But there are a small handful of games that just dont like anything but 9x,lLike MW2. but most of them do have work arounds or dos ports.
Another think to note is 2k doesn't have very good dos support foe games. But that's nothing a boot disk cant fix

Nice, not many members of the slot A club, I joined earlier with a dumpster find but wont have a chance to do anything with it for few months yet.

Do you have any other retro systems? If you already have a Win98 system I would go with Win2k just to be different.
Need for Speed, and Return Fire are the only games I have that don't like Win2k.

Or do what I do, Duel boot between the 2, I play most windows games in 2k, or drop back to Win98 for the games above and also Dos mode

I actually ended up going with Windows 98 SE on it, mainly because I want to run a few older games:

NFS2 SE
Oddworld
NFS Porsche 2000
NFS Hot Pursuit 2
Carmageddon 2
Rollcage

and a few more games that run better on 98SE.
For a 2k machine, the specs would be between the K6-2 - Pentium 3 range, and XP would be Pentium 4 upwards.

I am building my first Slot A PC at the moment too. I am looking to clean out the heatsink and re-apply thermal paste. I got the 'exterior' heatsink off with no trouble as it is just held in place with those clips. However, I am not sure of a couple of things:

Do I need to apply thermal paste between the cartridge and the heatsink? It is a very big area if I do!
Do I need to apply thermal paste between the CPU and the inside of the cartridge? If so, how do I open the cartridge?

At first I wanted to comment that you should toss that JNC asap but then I remembered that you're the one enjoying rebuilding these things...
How is the VIA chipset? I only have 2 AMD boards...

That PSU frightens me, but I assume from previous posts that you've modified this one to work better.

HDD choice is interesting: Quantum lct15 is a 4400RPM budget-class drive. In a slot A box I would assume fast+big 7200RPM units were much more often used, but I suppose this one is fine for Win98 (and I'm sure it's much quieter, too).

YES and YES.

For sure the thermal compound is toast and if I were you I'd change everything. You will need therma pads for the CAHE chips.

The process takes time but this way the CPUs will run cooler.

Please do 😀. I know they were properly designed circuit boards but populated "lightly". Replacing the components should provide an ok unit. If I remember right, the complete units were sold as Allied in Europe. The JNCs are a "celebrity" in Hungary (after one of the larger importers it seems: Vargáné).
