Realms of Arkania games are hardcore. Even the (manual) character generation requires rules observation as stated in the manual.

Which reminds me... I too need to start playing the series... sick of seeing milked genre and sequels of sequels with the so-called new games....

EDIT : I love the MT-32 music during character generation in ROA 1.

It took me 2-3 hrs to generate my six party members and it was quite entertaining. 😀 But I did seem to find a bug of sorts. I could not generate an Ice Elf, though I followed the required 13 Agility, 12 Intuition, and <4 Acrophobia. Ice Elf was never an archetype option when I hit those values...

Ah, just found the solution before posting this:

Well I guess I have to be a heavily armored knight in shining armor again....

Never thought this thread would be that long, but now, for something different.....

Where the heck has this game been my whole life? I know it's still early (I'm just exploring the dungeon in the opening town), but I'm LOVING it! I read lots of reviews on this game, and most of the big reviewers (CGW, I'm looking at you) panned the game widely. And honestly, I was intimidated by those reviews, I figured it would be way too micro-managy for me, but that's what's actually drawing me in. I'm actually falling for the story, and invested in my hours-to-create characters. Back in the day, I let CGW influence me into NOT buying this game, or the entire series. I was an Ultima guy, and this seemed way too complicated, but now that I'm actually playing it: super fun! MT-32 is making all the difference too. Very slow-paced, I'm not skimming the text like I usually do, and it's helping me to be drawn into the plot. I see many months of enjoyment in my future.

The more I learn, the more I realize how much I don't know.

Yes sometimes reviewers just aren't on your wavelength - some of my favourite games got average / poor reviews. It's a wonderful thing to find a diamond in the rough - keep us updated with your progress!

Looking at possibly playing these on my 486/MT-32 in the near future. I consider myself a RPG fan. Some of my favorite RPGS:
Ultima VII Pt 1 and 2
Lands of Lore 1
Might & Magic Xeen
Wizardry 8
Baldur's Gate

Reading about the ROA series, it sounds very hardcore and wondering if it's a series I'll enjoy or find tedious. If you have experience with this series, especially if you enjoyed it and completed it, I'd love to hear your thoughts to help me decide whether I should try them out or not.

I loved playing Lands of Lore 1, its one of those games you can just keep playing again and again its just that good. To bad they screwed up with the 3D in lands of lore 2.
Lands of Lore was very difficult when I played it the first time and was stuck on multiple parts throughout the game for weeks (urbish mines/upper opinwood/white tower level 3 anyone?)

Yeah, it was a pretty special game. I finished it about a year ago, and it was one of my favorite RPG experiences. It was the perfect length for a working adult too at about 25 hrs of gameplay. 😀
