Where can I download Sound Blaster 16 driver for Windows 3.1 / 3.11.

Can I listen to stereo, 44100smp/sec, 16-bit WAVE files (*.wav) in Windows 3.x?

I got two files from Creative.com. SBBASIC.exe and a separate update driver file. Both of these lockup seemingly when they are doing the hardware detection for the SB16. How do you get these drivers to install? I'm setting up Win3.11

I am haveing the same problems as swaaye only i am using a propper CD from creative 😀

It seems to crash in a sub program called WHATCARD.exe while trying to find the base (220)

I have tried everything i can think of in the dosbox.conf!

There MUST be a way round it, but i havent found it yet

The installer doesn't work in dosbox. You've got to be creative to skip the WHATCARD step (it's possible, but not easy), or install under a plain dos box in windows.

Install the windows drivers under plain dos, install screens as follows will take you to the selection of the type of the sound card(sb16, sb pro, and so on...), just hit "skip", and it should be ok.

The driver is a soundblaster 16 driver, it will only work on a sb16, it doesnt ask what card you have.

Also it only freezes when it is trying to find the card (on base 220)

I experimented a bit and tried to find working drivers but the only ones that work are my own old german ones I kept on an old CD.
The whatcard.exe that comes with that seems to work with the drivers found on soundblaster.com (and other places).
To install, start the installation and when it stalls either because it freezes or when it won't proceed because it doesn't like the IO address, turn of Dosbox and in the left over temporary directory replace whatcard.exe with the attached one and make it write protected (important, otherwise the installation will just overwrite it again).
When you now start the installationn it will complain that it can't create a file. Ignore it and proceed.

Edit: seems this doesn't work on a boot image. With this you have to improvise a bit more 😀
(for example, move the files from your image to you hd and start dosbox in that dir, install like I wrote above and then move the changed files back to the image)

Thanks, the file worked but not the way you suggested!

I notice if you leave the temporary folder, the installer say there is no drive to install on!

The Answer: Download the WHATCARD.exe from Doninus

1) Run the installer in a window with the mounted directory in the background,

2) as soon as the installer is running, the temporary folder is created

3) add the improved whatcard.exe to the folder (replacing the old one)

and there you go!
