Postby kr0os » 2017-12-09 @ 08:12

So, i've got some old files that are probably unsuported now days, its various files, but they have one similarity, when you open them in a text editor, they have got an odd hex like pattern, i guess if i find out what is this code i can "decipher" the files, anyway, i was hoping you guys would identify it.
this is how they look like https://pastebin.com/7sGLY1Th .
pardon me, if i commit any english mistakes.

Where did the files come from? Which program created them? What is supposed to be inside?

it come from an old chess game. i am not sure about the other two answers, im trying to reverse engineer it, so it can be translated.
I downloaded it from a brazilian chess blog: http://xadrezpirata.blogspot.com.br/201 ... x-074.html
Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is the name of the game, it was made by Mission Studios.
you can download it here: https://mega.nz/#!hJoGUY7I!csWVmhVBWA-O ... UE_6qIuWCc
the password for the compacted file is the link of the blog: http://www.xadrezpirata.blogspot.com
the files im talking about are in this path: Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess + DOSBox-0.74/BobbyFischerTeachesChess/BOOKS/
this game is very unknown and hard to find, thats all i know so far.

My understanding is that you're trying to translate the game, not the book itself. Correct?

It seems like the file format is proprietary, and you have to reverse-engineer the game executable to figure out the data structures.
