Windows 3.1 kinda limits your options. Why use it on a Pentium machine though?
I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.
because my K6-3 runs 95, and my P3 1.26 runs win98, and I want a 3.1 system 🤣.
I was thinking a Matrox millenium
S3 card perhaps? Trio64v+, Virge-325 or something like that.
Don't eat stuff off a 15 year old never cleaned cpu cooler.
Those cakes make you sick....

Good thinking. I like Millenium cards, best choice I belive for Dos + 3.11
Aaannnnd, what about a V3 PCI? 🤣

way overkill and over budget 🤣, besides my P3 has a Voodoo 3 3000

Best kill is overkill. And it should have a GF4 Ti 4xxx and V2 SLI anyways 🤣

🤣 Nah
They are structured.
As operational systems
AMD K6-3 400

Other parts I've got just havn't eoither recapped yet or put together
This Pentium 1, which is now going together of course
Athlon 700 (board needs recap)
Celeron D 3.06 Skt 478 board (not sure I want to use this for anything 🤣)
286-12 (likely just going to hang out on my wall, i played with it for awhile but I can't find a real solid use for it.

🤣 Meh... not so much.
Look below to see how a real structure looks like: (only the active ones)
Pentium MMX 233
64MB PC100
Voodoo 3 PCI
Ssoundblaster 16 CT2230 + NCR MIDI board
80GB ATA + 73GB SCSI + 36GB SCSI (yes, I definitely need all of them, why?)
CD-RW + ZIP + 1.2 FDD + 1.44 FDD
MS-DOS 6.22 + Windows 3.11 / Windows 95 OSR 2.1 / Windows 98 SE
Pentium III 1.4
512MB PC1333
Geforce 4 Ti 4200 + Voodoo2 SLI
SoundBlaster AWE64 + SIMMCONN 32MB
120GB ATA + 80GB ATA + 146GB SCSI + 73GB SCSI (I have my reasons, why? 😊)
DVD-RW + 1.44 FDD + Gotek
MS-DOS 6.22 + Windows 3.11 / Windows 95 OSR 2.1 / Windows 98 SE / Windows ME / Windows 2000
Opteron 180
4GB DDR
GTX 560Ti 1GB
Soundblaster Audigy II ZX
500GB SATA x 4 + 80GB SATA x 4 (stop asking! 🤣)
DVD-RW x 2 + 1.44 FDD
Windows XP SP3
Xeon X5470 (main rig, not retro 😊)
4GB DDR2
GTX 770 2GB
Onboard Sound
1TB x 4 + 2TB x 2
DVD-RW + BD-RW + 1.44 FDD
Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit
Joke aside, our systems looks quite similar if we put aside over powered GPUs and over abundance of OSes on my side of things.
Except HDDs. I love HDDs. 🤣

And you call an i5 retro? Shame on you man, shame on you!

Seconded, although if you can't get your hands on an S3 video card or a Matrox Millennium, there are a few other fine options for Windows 3.1x:
- Intel i740 - Has official Windows 3.1x drivers despite being released in 1998 and the DOS game compatibility closely matches S3 video cards.
- Cirrus Logic (GD5430-5465) - DOS game compatibility is nearly identical to S3 video cards.
- ATI Mach64 or Rage1/II/Pro/LT (Mach64 drivers can be used on those Rage cards) - DOS game compatibility is not as good as S3 but equal to Matrox, it depends on the games you want to play.
Source for DOS game compatibility tests: https://gona.mactar.hu/DOS_TESTS/
I realize you probably won't bother with most of the games listed in that page, so the decision for which brand of video card you'll like the most is up to you.
S3's should be plenty on eBay. Though I like CL-5446-PCI better than S3-Trio64v+/Virge-325 (I like the image quality), I find the S3 cards to be a better performer on a Pentium-166 and up. The reason as to why I keep 5446's to high end 486 machines. I was recommending the S3 cards, as the OP asked about a Dos/3.11 setup, and not about a Win9x setup. For a 9x setup, I would say Matrox+Voodoo1.
I see the difference between S3-Trio64v+/Virge-325 and CL-5446. As the CL has more vibrant colours and the S3's as having a stronger signal plus more sharp contrast. Performancewise, I see no real difference in speed, when sitting and gaming something like Duke3D. They feel equally fast in real life. I see the difference in benchmarks though. Numbers don't cheat. 😁

There's a seller that's selling Matrox Millenniums for $9.95 shipped on ebay. I just scooped one up, he has more.

Both the 5446 and S3 lineup are great for DOS. Either one would make a wonderful choice.
