I'm sure a wrapper will come out to support it like kernelex does for Steam on Windows 2000.

Really though Steam isn't needed. Just crack the game, emulate Steam or if the game doesn't require Steam then your're good.

If you use Steam for multiplayer then do so with a supported version of Windows.

I'm going to enjoy marking all the Steam games on my compatibility list for XP as troublesome. Should bring 2000 (vanilla) and XP even closer to the same compatibility level. 😀

I really hate to see XP support go. They really need to leave a legacy version of steam that at least allows you to install and launch games, just disable the store and chat / friends features.

I do the vast bulk of my steam gaming on my Dell running XP 🙁.. No more surfin' CS:S

I guess it's time to re-buy hard copies of all my favorite XP era games

Shame but inevitable in this online world.
Only way to guarantee running things on older OS's is still have the CD/DVD or offline installers like GOG

This is why you should support GOG.

Ok im gonna install steam on a XP box, install my favorite games, switch steam to offline mode and then image that sucker.

Ugh. I'm probably going to have to do that for my Vista box, too. And an XP image so I can have a virtual XP disk on my Linux boxes. I kinda wish GOG had Pinball Arcade, I damn near broke the bank trying to buy up all the legacy tables that they are going to be pulling soon due to IP/licensing issues. I will have to make sure I install it along with all the DLC on both those images. Such a PITA.

Hmmm just thought of something.

The steam fanboys always mention that Valve will push out a magical patch to make their (ie Valve) games offline when Valve disappears. Since they are dropping XP and Vista support (just like when 9x and 2000 support was dropped), this is their chance to prove it since it's so simple. Since they won't then that's proof that they never will. Awesome.

Agreed but unfortunately I was already invested into steam before GOG was really known, common scenario.

I also enjoy playing Counterstrike games and I still spend a lot of time on Source on my XP machine with a 4:3 screen.

I'm trying to consider how to create a bit of noise to at least take a chance of asking them to leave us a legacy steam version for limited use on XP. I know it'll be ignored though.

what about fallout 3
that game ONLY works with xp or vista
whats the point of even getting that game on steam then

Fallout 3 works fine on my Win10 machine, but maybe I just have a lucky configuration. Not to argue your point though, I have many games on steam that wont work on windows 10 for me, and games that absolutely HATE running on my new graphics card, that run better on my older machines. We have a dismal state of support for 2000-2009 games on modern hardware yet they want to cut off older operating systems... sigh.

There is patch that fixes that to work with 7. Ironically it always had terrible crashes and bugs under 7, but when I installed it under 10 recently in compatibility mode it ended up working great.

Main pc: Asus Rampage Gene ii, X5650, 250gb Samsung Evo, RX480, 12gb Crucial DDR3 1600.

Still, I'm pretty bummed about this. I think as long as my XP machine survives I can just keep launching the old steam client in offline mode. But I think you have to get online at least once before you can do offline mode, so we wouldn't be able to access our steam libraries moving beyond 2019 with fresh installs.

That's what I get for being too unwilling to learn new things and placing my bets on GOG :\

Amassing physical copies of games was definitely not a mistake.

Do not refrain from refusing to stop hindering yourself from the opposite of watching nothing other than that which is by no means porn.

Bypass Steam altogether.
