I have installed dosbox using fink on my mac (10.4.2.) I downloaded the "Self installing EXE" and the "Official Cracked EXE" from
http://www.bardstaleonline.com/BT3/Downloads.asp

This results in two files: Thief.exe (O.C. EXE) and thief_of_fate-msdos.exe (S.I. EXE)

Here is the relavent code of me running each:

C:\BARD>THIEF.EXE

C:\BARD>_

The other one shows up as "THIEF_~2.EXE"

C:\BARD>THIEF_~2.EXE
This program cannot be run in DOS mode.

C:\BARD>_

What am I doing wrong?

the second is probably a windows self extractor

try unzipping/unrarring it from MACOSX

It's an unfortunate trend.
Quite some companies who distribute dosgames turn them into self extracting WINDOWS executables....
While it's perfectly simple to create dos selfextractors.

Water flows down the stream
How to ask questions the smart way!

I see that modern compilations are stupid enough to be made using the windows installer of some packer. There are self-extracting files for ms-dos too.

One Hint for these cases...

You can often rename these self-extractors to match the file extension for the packer used (ZIP, RAR) and unpack them manually on your host O.S.
