Ehhh, desoldering gun is not required but can possibly make the job a bit easier.

And de-soldering braid works a lot better if you put flux on the braid first. It helps it suck up the melted solder a lot better.

But for the through-hole caps, I generally just melt one side and then tip the cap so it pulls the leg partway out and then repeat for the other side. Usually 2-3 time of this and the cap is out and it usually brings most of the solder along with it.

using flux helps a lot as well... it goes way faster and the components around the one you are replacing don't get near as hot because the heat transfers a lot better to the spot that you are working on. I generally use regular old flux paste. My main container of it was sold as plumbing solder paste, but it works way, way, way better for stuff like this then the lame liquid flux.

I probably need tools that would make desoldering as easy as possible because I am really not very good with my hands and I don't want to ruin any motherboards.

You need to add more solder before doing anything else. Flux (and braid) is only needed when cleaning out the hole. It's not that bad, but you should be confortable with soldering first.

There's only one 'X' in that board. How's it going to keep up?

I bought a Gefen VGA to DVI scaler Plus off ebay and it arrived much sooner than expected.
I hope to have some time to play with it tonight, maybe get some real DOS captures going, livestream some doom for my friends or something... 😈
It's smaller than I thought it might be. Always a good thing I guess.

^^ let us know how that does with standard VGA modes (especially 70Hz ones, e.g. 13h or other 200/400-line modes.) Looks like a useful little piece of gear if it handles those well.

I bought some components for a AM3-build I will be working on later.
4x Samsung PC10600U DDR3-1333MHz 1GB RAM (€1,50 a piece; can you believe that?! I regret not having bought more! 😜)
1x ATI Radeon X300 SE 128MB DDR SD-RAM PCIe Graphics Card (€3,50; I should probably get a faster graphics card though for a AM3-system. 😜)
1x AMD Athlon II X2 255 3,1GHz 2MB 2GHz FSB Socket AM3 (€5,00)

Ehh is that retro already, is it e-waste junk or am I getting old? 😉

And here we go again, the never ending fight of "that case is horrible" vs "that case is awesome"
It took me practically 2 years to track down one of these on my area. I can't belive i had to wait 20 years to get it.

First i bought one that was very cheap, that was missing almost all parts, no fans, no power supply for front light, no front door.
And today i managed to find a second one on sale that was almost destroyed, broken glass, smashed aluminum everywhere, no working front light, but...had all the parts i was missing on the first one.

So with 2, exchanging parts, i managed to build a good one.

I wanted this model because it is aluminum and weights nothing
The size of the case is smaller in height and depth than the regular xaser III,

Ladies and gentlemen..the one and only....Thermaltake XASER III LANFIRE
From a time were all cases were a piece of shit, white with no side window.
Remember when we used cathode tubes? now we use leds hahaha

It is quite deliciously hideous! The "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" of computer cases!

STB Soundrage 32 with the AMD InterWave synth.

This was a difficult card to get up and running, and I have the original driver disks. I tried to set it up in a DOS-only build, and I couldn't get the card to initialize. Finally got it to work in a 98SE build but only after following the instruction sheet crashed my OS so bad that I had to reimage. You can run DOS games after exiting to DOS from Windows.

This card has only a 1MB ROM for the InterWave. It's not great but better than the cheaper synths and patch sets. I'll add it eventually to my dormant wavetable synth thread.

Does it sound any different when compared to GUS PnP?

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

Are those original driver disks available for download somewhere? If not, could you image the disks and post them here? Thanks.

It works...but its severely flawed, I need to talk to someone familiar with both this unit and Micomsoft SC-512N1-L/DVI and drivers.
