Hi everyone, I have lurked for quite some time through these forums in the past, and today I could not find any answers to an issue I am facing with my hardware and decided to register an account here
I have a 486 Dell Latitude laptop running windows 95, and I would like to transfer some software and/or games to the computer. The floppy drive is broken and requires very rare and specific parts to fix, so I resorted to buying a pcmcia cf card adapter. It came in the mail today with a 4gb cf card and a 32mb cf card. The issue is, whenever I insert the cf card into the adapter the laptop freezes, and the cpu completely stops. I have tried fat16 and fat32 formats with no luck. Other pcmcia cards do work on the machine. I also happened to try the adapter in a windows 98 laptop and it worked perfectly fine and installed the drivers, although it did take a while to sense the card was inserted. That laptop has a usb slot, so that's not what I need the adapter for though. I've tried inserting if before powering on and the screen does not even power on, or is stuck on a black screen. I would feel I wasted money on this laptop and the adapter if I cannot even do anything with it, has anyone had this issue before or knows a fix? 😒

I have a laptop that is similar but from another brand, and it has the same issue with pcmcia Compact Flash adapter. I suspect an issue of electrical power available to the pcmcia port...
I'm using a parallel port compact flash adapter with it and a Zip100 drive.
In your case I'd get a pcmcia network card, and a serial null modem cable if you need to transfer drivers to the laptop.
