I decided to start restoring an old IBM XT 286 that I had in the attic to get dust and anything else........

as I expected it was chock full of dust, so I pulled out the mainboard from the case

I start to sneeze again just seeing the picture 🤣

After a nice clean with the vacuum cleaner, now it's much better

then I finished cleaning it with a good brushing and isopropyl alcohol. It looks like new 😊

now it's time to see if it still works after all these years

and it works

My MIDI modules: Roland MT-32 (old), CM-32L, SC-55, SC-55mk2, SC-88, SC-88 Pro, JV-1010, XV-2020, XV-5080 | Yamaha MU-90, MU-100, SW1000XG, MU-2000EX | Akai SG01k | Hammond GM-1000 | Kawai GMega | Korg NX5R, N1R, Triton Rack

I would also open and inspect the power supply, imagine how much dust is in there not to mention check capacitors and output, don't want to burn up that nice board with a powrsupply that may be out of spec now

The post has been successful, obviously the errors are due to the fact that I removed the old battery

The power supply that I used for this test I had completely overhauled last month 😊

I recently picked up one of these on fleabay but still haven't had time to play with it. It's scattered about the house in a dozen different pieces. I think I heard somewhere that early IBM CGA cards won't work with ATs because they can't handle the increased CPU speed?

Is this too much voodoo?

If works a crappy hercules, I don't see why a CGA even if it's an early model won't work.........

not necessarily, I recently attempted to use an original IBM CGA card in my 286 build and it flipped out. It sort of worked, but it got hotter than I was comfortable with and it also didn't behave with some programs.

[SOLVED] DOS programs refuse to use CGA graphics modes

I don't think that's true.
What is true is that CGA cards do not have an onboard crystal, so they rely on the OSC signal from the ISA bus, which should generate a proper 14.32 MHz NTSC clock.
Some AT clones might not generate the proper clock, which would cause sync problems between the CGA card and the monitor. But I would expect the original IBMs to work properly. In fact, I believe CGA was even one of the video options that the 5162 and 5170 were sold with.

One thing I notice with this computer, in factory configuration, is severe crowding of the I/O card, drive cables and drive controller card. So much so that the drive controller card is physically warped. Bent in an arc. (It's not just my machine, googling images of other units on the internet shows that this deformation is common.)

Is this too much voodoo?
