Hey all, hope someone can help me out.

I downloaded and put in DOSBox 0.63

I got Thexder in a folder ready to install.

I need to type "installh c:" to install the program, but get

Illegal Command: makepath. File not Found. File not Found. File not Found. File not Found. File not Found. […]

thexder
Illegal command: a
Illegal command: der,.
Illegal command: copied.

If I'm reading it right - it did create a Sierra folder in the c:\, however it can't make another folder?

I read on the guide at Dosbox that thexder ran fine, so can someone help me out here?

Try installing it from native windows NTVDM (use execute or cmd.exe). If you get past installation, use DOSBox for playing it.

It cannot find makepath (program or a BAT file)...
Anyway: BAT files are text files, so you can modify them or to avoid them completely (by entering the commands manually). Post here the content of the file...

Also, keep in mind that many installations, specially for older games, just issued COPY commands to install the games. So if you do not see any packed file, you could just create a folder and copy all files inside. Next, try looking for a setup.exe install.exe or whatever. Configure game and play.

It's amazing how much DOS I've forgotten over the years.

Thanks, I printed out the batch files and was able to follow it and do a manual install, and it ran nicely.

Music's choppy as hell, but I did a search on Thexder and that seems due to a new version of DOSbox.

After 10 minutes, I realized I easily die in the same places I did decades ago.

try to edit dosbox.conf and set core=dynamic and play with cycles in dosbox with ctrl+f11 and ctrl+f12

The music in thexder is awful, unless maybe you're playing it in Tandy mode - but then the graphics are worse 🙁

Anyways, you probably could have just copied all the Thexder files into one directory on the hard disk and run thexder.com (or whatever it is) from DOSBox - the game auto-detects your hardware and doesn't save anything as far as I know, so there's nothing to configure.

A little off-topic: I once used GameWizard to give myself unlimited health so I could get past the 3rd level or so. I found that the levels just loop over and over. However, a friend of mine swears that he beat Thexder and that there is an ending. Does anyone know which of us is correct?

I think maybe it was Firehawk that he beat, as I cheated in that one as well and made it to the end and saw the ending.

There's a thread in the dev forum about GW iirc, and no,
it does not work.

Speaking of GameWizard I've received a couple of complaints that it doesn't work in DosBox. Anyone have a copy and tried it?

Well, I am actually testing 4 DOS Cheating tools, being

GameWizard Pro 2.0b
Game Master 7
Game ICE
FPE2000

Found these on an old DOS-CD of mine, I'll tell you how it goes heh 😜

(still, the team at DOSBOX should implement some cheatingtool 😁)
