When I was as this thrift store yesterday (picked up a Dell 2007FPb monitor for $10 in basically perfect shape), I spied an original Logitech G15 keyboard (the one with the flip-up LCD screen) for $5 but passed on it.

Thinking more though, I kind of want to pick it up to use with my main retro rig as I vaguely recall owning one of those in 2005 when they were released, and testing it in-store it seemed to be in great condition aside from being filthy.

However, in recent years I have been converted to mechanical keyboards and at the moment have a TKL WASD Cherry MX brown switch keyboard set up for the retro rig...

What do you guys suggest? Pick it up for 5 bucks, clean it up and just give it a whirl?

I'd grab it. I have that exact same keyboard I got back when it first came out. It's one of my favorite keyboards.

thanks!

I'm going to stop by during work tomorrow and if it's still there I'll grab it. Figure worst case scenario it's only $5 spent and maybe 20 minutes to clean it up.

I hope it's still there for you. Logitech still supports the original G15 as well

Thanks again - me too!

Which OS/OSes do you use it on? Thinking back, if it came out in ~ 2005, there probably isn't any software/drivers for it to work under 9x or 2000, just Xp and newer, right?

Been debating running the new retro rig as Me/Xp instead of Me/2k or 98SE/2k for better software support (only dual booting the older OS for DOS games that don't work correctly under 2k) but I'm not sure a dual 1.4ghz PIII with 2gb of RAM would run very well under Xp.

I'm using it under Windows xp, windows 7 ultimate 64 bit and windows 10 they have drivers for them all. It's a great gaming keyboard and for general typing as well. I've had they keyboard for a long time and I still love it.

To my taste, the keys on G15 are too mushy even for a membrane keyboard. I think all G series keyboards of that time were "plagued" like that.

Not a worst way to spend 5$ though, this keyboard has tons of interesting features.

I must be some kind of standard: the anonymous gangbanger of the 21st century.

yeah that was my only real concern - given that these days I prefer tactile clicky mechanical keyboards (favorites at the moment are Razer's 'opto-mechanical' laser switches, and Kailh box whites).

That all being said, for $5 and a bit of time to clean it.... might not hate retro gaming on a soft rubber dome or membrane keyboard. I've definitely wasted more money on more useless things so far with this setup (like buying 3 of the same graphics card on accident... *sigh)

For five bucks you really can't go wrong. The programmable macro keys were great for WoW back when I used to play.

haha yeah for sure, I still play casually sometimes (haven't had an active account for a few months but I'm sure I'll hop on again).

Definitely going to pick it up if it's still there tomorrow. I figure I can sneak way from work when everyone goes to lunch... this thrift store is only about 5 minutes away from there so I'll be back super quick.

Personally I'd prefer a Model F AT or 122, but there's probably not one of those at the same thrift store for the same price 😜

The screen is a nice little gimmick, maybe you could use the keyboard on some computer that you don't need to type much on. A media center PC comes to mind, would be great if you could show what was playing on the screen.

Argo was there but on closer inspection there was a chunk missing from the D key and one of the little plastic feet was missing.

If not for the D key damage I would have bought it but too much hassle. Perhaps another will come along though
