Compete with even invoice dating to 2002.. I was a RedHat 7 guy back then (ever since I moved to RedHat 5.2 from Slackware in 1998) but SuSE was always a good distro in my book, happy to own it.

Yeah, or just copy the CD to your HDD (why you would do it any other way is beyond me)

I had that box in French, I already had a Windows 3.1 at the time so I saved some money by buying the upgrade instead of the full retail.
Received this french OS2 Warp 3 45-day trial disc:

Nabbed this at a garage sale. Don't think I've ever seen a boxed copy of Paint Shop Pro before. Not a particularly 'retro' version, but it does run on Win98; for $2 I figured it'd be fun to mess around with. Came with a super weighty manual and a ton of schlock-y 'special offers' in the box. No one ever claimed that $30 mail-in rebate, BTW.

I used to use the shareware PSP v2 or v3 a ton back in the day (until I pirated Photoshop 3 from school.) Never had a 'registered' version until now. 😎 This program is FIRMLY associated with the shareware/BBS/coverdisk days in my mind, so I thought it's kind of neat to have in a big box.

^^ nice, yeah I think I must have started with PSP2 & gradually moved on to v3 and then v4. I remember one major revision where they introduced editing features (not just convert/resize/crop/etc.) which hugely impressed me at the time.

PSP8 seems pretty good, I installed it on my WinXP mini-PC and was playing around with it. It even has some functionality that Photoshop doesn't, including reading & writing legacy image formats (LBM, PCX, Amiga IFF) which is useful to me. Shame it never really got a hook in the industry for "professional" use. Interesting history behind the company too, it was essentially a one-man project for a lot of time until it really took off.

In other news, I went to a couple charity shops in an area I don't usually go to today, and found this gem for two dollars. Somehow I keep finding these. To be honest, I mostly just pick up stuff like this so I can scan the docs & image the disks for more long-term archiving purposes (and to create an even bigger backlog for myself.) But I definitely remember playing around with this program as a kid:

And of course the disks - all five 360k originals, and presumably the original owner's backups:

There were also some, ERRRR, bonus disks stuffed in the box. No idea what's on these yet, especially not the "NOT FOR KIDS" one. Guess we'll find out. 😖

^^ At the other shop, I bought this sweet reversible neoprene Sony Vaio bag for $5 (the inside is a nice, stodgy, black), which fits my Lenovo Ideapad perfectly (I've been using another Vaio bag for my Macbook for years - and I've never owned a Sony Vaio of any sort!), and a weird LucasArts sampler/compilation disc for $1. The contents of the disc - The Dig, Rebel Assault II, and Full Throttle (I'm assuming they're demos) - aren't anything unusual, but if you look closer:

...brought to you by Chrysler/Plymouth?? What the hell?

Anyone know the story behind this?

And finally, just as I was paying for the above, I noticed behind the counter a super-clean Nikon Coolpix P500 with a mint bag, three batteries & two chargers for just $20! Naturally I wasn't going to leave that behind, & it's what all the pics I just posted were taken with. Pretty pleased about that!

Bought a copy of Windows 95 Upgrade on CD with the Internet Explorer Starter Pack and a copy of Windows 95 with USB Support (the person that had that must've added that in there). The Windows 95 Upgrade will probably be used on my Packard Bell after I do a drive swap again as I know the first version of Windows 95 doesn't like the FAT32 system and only works with FAT16, if my memory serves me right. The 95 Upgrade + IE Starter Pack CDs are in great shape, but the 95 with USB Support has seen better days and could use repairs. Luckily, the game store I started to go to on Monday morning can repair CDs that'll look like new.

I know Windows 95 revision B and higher (OSR2.X) supports FAT32 and my ThinkPad 380D used FAT16 for the file system and converted it to FAT32 successfully before I upgraded to Windows 98FE. All I need to find is a copy of Windows 98SE upgrade so I can install that on my ThinkPad.

Found this yesterday for a mighty five bucks. It was still in the shrink wrap even! Couldn't resist:

On the disks are literally six .mid files each, totalling less than 1/4 of the available space. No text files or documentation or anything. They could have easily fit this all on one 720k disk but instead spread them across two HD ones for some bizarre reason. Here are the goods:

It's a karaoke pack for something or other; the package makes a big deal about the lyrics being included. They're embedded in the MIDI files, which AFAIK was a Yamaha extension to the format ("MIDI Type O".)

There are only a couple songs here I actually like, and several I can't stand. 😜 Still, fun to play around with. Just for you guys, I wasted a little too much time making some high-quality renderings of three of the tracks with Yamaha's S-YXG100 softsynth and a bunch of scans of the box & docs. That link won't be around forever so grab 'em early if you want.

Ooh!

Will these MIDI files work with a DB50XG? I will be adding these to my computer's MIDI file collection to play them.

Don't see why they wouldn't! They're just basic XG-MIDI files from the looks of it; I don't think they need any of the "higher XG levels."

They sound nicer than most General MIDI covers of lame ballads, but don't set your hopes too high. 😜
