I want to be able to run the windows version of King's Quest 6. The windows version has better graphics than the dos version.

I'm able to run the dos version. But I prefer the windows version because the portraits are nicer looking and because the graphics are better overall.

If I use the vdmsound method to run the windows version, there is a bug with the cursor. The cursor remains as the bubble icon even if I try to change it.

If I use dosbox and windows 3.11, the windows version runs almost flawlessly, but the background music does not work. I can hear the sounds, but not the music.

Is there anything I can do to make the music work? Should I install certain drivers in windows 3.11? I'm running windows xp and a sound blaster audigy soundcard.

Music in Windows 3.x - are you able to play MID files in W3.1x? Just try it in Media Player (even in Windows there are various sound files which you can try).
I guess the game uses MID files for music (guessing, I do not have it) and you do not have support configured for them.

I solved the problem by selecting Base Midi instead of Extended Midi.

It turns out that the best sound drivers weren't installed.

After installing the sound blaster awe 32 / sb 16 drivers, I could play the game using Extended Midi and everything works great.
