I need help. Hero's Quest works great, but no sound! None.

I am a little computer illiterate, but here's what I know about my laptop:
1. (I know nothing about my motherboard)
2. Intel Pentium II Processor (speed = ?)
3. 130,544 Kb of RAM
4. (I know nothing about my video board)
5. (All I know about my sound board is that it works fine)
6. OS = Windows 2000
7. The game is "Quest for Glory 1 : So you want to be a hero?", the original version (NOT VGA), called "Hero's Quest" (Version 1.000).
8. The game works great (with or without DosBox or VDMSound), except that I get no sound at all: neither music nor effects.
9. This is a consistent problem that has been there from the first time I tried to use it. It's always the same.
10. (I don't know what a "sound mode" is)
11. (Video mode seems irrelevant to this issue)
12. I've tried both DosBox version 0.63 AND VDMSound version 2.01, but to no avail.
13. I tried making sure the sound was on max in my volume control on all the controls. I tried making sure the sound was on max (and ON) within the game. I tried running the "install" that comes with the game and that asks to configure sound, joystick, mouse, etc., but it gives me the error that there isn't enough room to install the game (I have several gigs of free space). Also, I suspect that the install process that comes with the game already finished configuring the game's setup before the error occured. I think that it's only trying to copy files at that point, into a sub-directory that it automatically created, but I already have all the files, and they work fine.
14. I've read the README for both emulators, thoroughly. I've read other peoples' postings on many sites (including this one).

Please. Please. Somebody help me. I'm at W.I.T.'s end!!!

Thanks,

(Qf)QfG.

Yeah. Like I said: I tried running the install.exe file, which ran me through some configuration steps for different things like sound, mouse, joystick, etc., but in the end, it says I don't have enough space on my hard drive (I have several gigs of free space, though!). Because of that error, the installation doesn't complete. Nevertheless, I don't even know if install.exe is going to fix the problem, since it probably mostly just copies files. I already have all the files, and they work fine. I can save, load, etc... It's really just the sound that's missing.

Here is specifically what the error message says:

(prompt)[b]echo off
"There is not enough space on c to install Hero's Quest I!"
"Approximately 2.6 megabytes of disk space are required."
Press any key to continue.

This is what my RESOURCE.CFG file contains:

videoDrv=MCGA320.DRV
soundDrv=CMS.DRV
kbdDrv=IBMKBD.DRV
mouseDrv= YES

I managed to run INSTALL.EXE succesfully. Still nothing. I now have two copies on my hard drive. One where I installed from, which doesn't have sound (this is the original that I had from before), and one that is now installed recently in my drive's root directory's SIERRA folder, which ALSO doesn't have any sound. (Although you gotta love the way they used to decide for you where you wanted your games installed!).

Neither copy has sound. As I suspected, INSTALL.EXE doesn't really help configure stuff that much. That really sucks, 'cause I refuse to play without sound (of course).

Please help. Please! It's getting harder and harder not to play.

I see where you're going with this RESOURCE.CFG thinking.
Let me try some of the other confguration options of the install.exe steup process...

soundDrv=ADL.DRV (still no sound)

soundDrv=CSM1.DRV (SOUND!!!!!! Oh God Thank you Lord!!! SOUND! -- but it's not as good as I remembered. Maybe it's better. I don't really know, but I do know that it's different from I had on my PC speaker).

soundDrv=FB01.DRV (ALSO SOUND! I think this is even better!!!)

I'll take it from here.

THANK YOU SO SO SO MUCH!!!!!! I LOVE YOU!

For anyone out there reading this, this might be of interest if you're having problems getting sound and/or running INSTALL.EXE:

- Try taking the whole folder where you have the game, copying it to a different drive (a CD or a USB key or a diskette...), NOT ZIPPED or compressed in any way.
- Then run INSTALL.EXE from there.
- On the drive you specified to the install program at the end, it will make a folder called SIERRA, and in it, another folder called HERO. In HERO, you'll find the file SIERRA.EXE.
- Download and install VDMSound.
- Right-click on SIERRA.EXE and select "Run with VDMS".
- If you still have no sound, just re-install it again (run INSTALL.EXE again from your non-hard drive), but this time, chose a DIFFERENT sound system. One of them should work.
- Good luck.
