Found this little guy in a box of circuit boards for just 50 cents. I think many of you can spot why it wouldn't be working:

And it works! This card will live to play Unreal in Glide mode for yet another day 😎

Nice! Did you just add the missing capacitor (C101), or replaced them all?

Looks like he also righted C24, which was flapping in the breeze.

Another thrift score. I spotted this "combo" CD/DVD/HDD media player thing for $19.99. Doesn't look too interesting from the front:

But around back, there's a suspicious looking arrangement of ports...

Sure enough, it's a mini-ITX PC on the inside:

Specifically a VIA EPIA with a C3/533, an 80GB HDD, and a really neat little Meanwell ATX-ish power supply. I tried it out in the store (specifically violating the printed instructions not to plug anything into the VGA or USB ports), and it tried to boot some kind of Gentoo install off the HDD, but stopped before it got to a login screen. Not sure if that was what was originally installed on there or if someone had been messing around with it already. The "factory seal" sticker was long gone.

A little digging online shows that these are (or were) the standard media player used in Starbucks franchises, in order to stream their corporate smooth jazz over the internet. Shockingly, this implies a Starbucks might have closed at some point in the pacific northwest. Or maybe not.

I got it to boot from a CD-ROM, but it's finnicky. USB keyboards are disabled in the BIOS so I had to pull the board out to use the blocked-off PS/2 ports. There's a BIOS password set that I haven't been able to crack yet, but that should be doable. For some reason it absolutely wouldn't boot my usual go-to boot disc, Hiren's, but it will boot other CD media just fine so I'm using the Ultimate Boot CD for now. Fun times.

I also grabbed this Dell E176FPb with a really long VGA cable for $5. Yes, I have a reason I needed this.

The VGA port seemed kinda normal, and I know some media players do have RS-232 ports...

It's the Centronix port that gave it away.

I think it might be neat to build a decent media center out of that case. Stick a more modern board in it with a bigger hard disk, get a wireless USB keyboard / mouse and plug it into your bedroom television.

Wonder if you could make those media buttons and the screen work with Windows?

OOO Another BocaRAM card!

I've got a BocaRAM XT with 512K installed, and I've got more RAM chips on the way in the form of other defective cards which happen to have chips installed.

Where did you ever find a BocaRAM AT with the 2MB expansion board??? Where would I find such a device for my AST Advantage??

I found it on eBay for about the price that just the boards by themselves normally go for with 0 RAM.

I think I saw some AST boards on there as well. Does the AST you have need a special RAM board or is it just a standard ISA one?

Correct 😀
Only replaced C101 as these are a pain to work on without a heatgun. C24 was loose, but heating up the pads fixed it.

I have a bunch of V3 with missing at least one of the C101/ C98 / C95 and they still work just fine. But can't hurt to replace the missing parts. Good job. 😀

Did yesterday a meeting with collector friends. We bought a lot with 6 old notebooks, i got a Canon BN 700 from the pack. Its a Pentium 100MHz 16Mb ram and German Win 95 on a 1gig HDD. Some plastic is missing (HDD cover, baterry cover - never seen a Duracell notebook baterry before) It fell on my leg the baterry itself is about 1kg 😵 The notebook has built in color printer i dint try it probably ink is dry... You can open the keyboard to set paper size it and the printed document comes out at the back side. From the notebook seller I bought a Pentium Pro full PC too, Matrox PCI graphics with a connector which looks like MIDI - i think its like on old Apple machines and on the bracket it says VIDEO so no joystick port. Also a Sound Blaster sound card, an USB PCI card and serial paralell headers. The HDD is dead 😵
We also exchanged a few things so I got a Compaq Armada M300 with PIII 500MHz 128Mb of ram and around 10gig HDD. Runs with XP now. It has the original charger and dock too. Nice little machine.
Also got an ATI PCI graphics. The PPro came in a case with AT keyboard and serial mouse too. It was a good day 😊

PS new to imgur IDK how to use it so please tell me if you cant see the photos I will upload here!

You need to go to computer recycle centers.

We have a few computer recyclers in my area but they seem to watch Ebay prices and charge a lot more than what I consider reasonable. Have had fair luck at the local Salv Army stores but the pickings are sparse...

Hate posting a reply and then have to edit it because it made no sense 😁 First computer was an IBM 3270 workstation with CGA monitor. Stuff: https://archive.org/details/@horun
