i always used a Voodoo 2 PCI additional to the Onboard Graphics.

The VIA C3 is not really that fast so you will not get a huge improvment of using a PCI Card anyway.

You got a 400Mhz FPU and a 800Mhz Integer Core.

FPUwise you will hit aproximal K6-2 300 Speed..

The Voodoo will you give best Performance, because it has well optimized drivers.

Thank you. That would be a nice solution but I don’t like VGA output quality even as it is, and passing it through Voodoo 2 is not going to improve it. I’m thinking about getting a Voodoo 3 or a Banshee for this machine.

I was intending to use my Banshee or Rendition V2100 in mine; it seems like something along those lines would be a good fit. Note that I still haven't tried either of those cards to confirm it will work with them.

Word of warning: Banshees live up to their name and get hot, although in my experience it's actually the 5V regulator that turns into a little burger grill. The chip itself "should" be fine with a standard heat sink & small fan. But be aware of that if you're packing it into a super small form factor build.

By the way, I tried it with a Savage4 PCI and it didn’t post with it either 😵

So the list so far is:
- S3 Trio 64 - works
- SiS 6215 - works

- S3 Savage 4 - doesn’t work
- GeForce 2MX - doesn’t work

Weird that the Savage4 doesn't work... I had this idea it was quite compatible in this regard like the Matrox G200. Are the Savage4 and the GeForce 2MX keyed for both 3.3 and 5v?

GF2MX is keyed for both 3.3V and 5V. Savage 4 is keyed only for 5V.

Scratch it, I tried the Savage4 in my Super Socket 7 PC and it didn’t post either, I guess the card is simply dead.

I got another Savage4 PCI - Creative CT6850. This one works perfectly.

Some tests:

AMD K6-III+ 550 MHz with S3 Savage 4 PCI:

Quake 640x480 (no WC) - 14.2 fps
Quake 640x480 (WC) - 29.0 fps

VIA Ezra 800 MHz with VIA PLE133T graphics:

Quake 640x480 (no Fastvid) - 5.9 fps
Quake 640x480 (Fastvid) - 13.2 fps

VIA Ezra 800 MHz with S3 Savage 4 PCI:

Quake 640x480 (no Fastvid) - 20.0 fps
Quake 640x480 (Fastvid) - 33.3 fps

The C3 is absolutely stable and cool at 1 GHz, at this clock speed I get 38 fps in Quake 640x480 with Fastvid. This means that basically every other SVGA DOS game should work perfectly (e.g. DN3D, System Shock, Fallout 1 DOS etc.)

In Windows 98, it feels somewhat snappier than K6-III+ at 550 MHz. I haven't tried any Windows games yet.

I planning build but with a asus mobo with the same cpu. I wanted use the EPIA but the lack of ISA slot remove the vantages of SETMUL use for me.
The Quake fps result is almost a P1 perfomance.
For win98/95 games, try the pre windows 98 like Turok, Inconming, Motor Racer and Forsaken

If the motherboard has SB Pro emulation in the BIOS, it's going to work perfectly for DOS games. It definitely works for every single DOS game I have tried to run on my Epia.

The "china" new-old-stock Nvidia FX5200/5500 PCI cards on Ebay are a lot of fun and I think a good match.
