Will the VOGONS logo change? It looks really nice as it is. I also hope there's an option to maintain the purple-y blue colour scheme the site currently has. Hopefully the new site won't be some optics nuclear disaster like so many sites are nowadays...

Yes, I rather like it myself as well. Reminds me of my hometown's performing arts hall. The entire building, inside and out, purple.

Keeping a color scheme is not a hard thing to do. A better question is, does the site staff want to keep it? A lot of forums nowadays is moving from one off custom themes/styles. Remember that less custom = less support headaches.
Id like to see the color scheme kept. But as long as its not a blinding white/blue or hot dog stand and just as usable if not more usable why should a user care?
Before the same gets posted again and again, just enjoy the preview Dosfreak posted 😉

Is that preview a joke or the real deal? Some posts make it out to be joke of some sorts.

Scene from "The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe", part of "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" series of books by Douglas Adams:
While on prehistoric Earth, Arthur and Ford realize that they might be able to discover the ultimate question by randomly pulling Scrabble letters from a bag. The random letters spell: "What do you get when you multiply six by nine?"See also: http://www.6by9.net/why-6by9/
Looks like they've still got a long way to go...
Actually took me quite some time (years) to get that joke. When I first read it in the 80's, I was just confused.
how about we close this thread now until the update actually happens? And no, I am not privy to that information.
As you probably have realised, the update was delayed (due to some real life events).
We are looking for a new window to perform it, but a (new) date has not yet been picked.
While updating, we will also take the opportunity to reconfigure, harden the server settings and perform more tasks.
This should not affect the forum itself, but it does make for an increase in the time needed for the upgrade,
hence it takes some planning and preparation to perform.
The logo will change and so will the colours. It's still purple, but a different shade.
In general, the contrast between text and background will increase significantly as that is on the low side currently.

This is a welcome change.
Also, please don't change your avatar, ever.

Agreed. Qbix has the best ever avatar I have seen here, hahaha. Yours (netscape) is a close second, it was my fav browser.

Just waiting for the update. That said. I like how things are as of now.

Does that include disabling support for older TLS protocols, as seems to be common security practise these days? That would eliminate a good number of older browsers, which often don't support anything more recent.
Guys, the website will likely be completely broken on older browsers, and we have to accept that probability.
It may be a blessing in disguise as we could put together a system to at least read the forums from old browsers, if not log in and post, and support even older browsers than the current site works with.
World's foremost 486 enjoyer.
I don't understand why security even matters a little bit for bullshitting about useless old hardware and games but maybe that's just me
Data could be wiped or worse modified
System could be used to attack other systems
People are lazy and use the same passwords everywhere
Access to the system via a vulnerability can allow further access to the system and even escape from a VM to access other VMs
etc
For compatibility with the new website you can try:
Try the website when it's released and see if it works before complaining....
Try an Internal\External Proxy that allows sites with newer ciphers or standards to work with old system, various ones can be used but one can be found on MSFN that's updated.
Try WebOne proxy: WebOne - proxy for old browsers to make them Web 2.0-capable
Try a newer browser for your old OS: List of Web Browsers For All Operating Systems

what about allowing people to access the forum via unencrypted http in a read-only capacity? I don't see any way that could be exploited
Anything accessible to the internet can be exploited, it's just a matter of how and when.
Hopefully login is only allowed from https on the new site, not sure if http will be enabled or not.
If http allowed I can see the stupid questions now asking why they can't login so you'd have to make changes for that by possibly adding a message when a user uses http that login is not allowed. IIRC, chrome is disallowing the mixing of http and https pretty soon if they haven't already.
I should have said "I don't see any way that can be exploited that wouldn't also apply to an TLS encrypted connection"
Also who cares what chrome is doing were talking about 90s browsers brug
Let me point to the site name: Very old games on new systems!
Seriously these days you need to have your server and site secure.
